My Favorite House Sets

This session was originally recorded for a fundraiser during last year, but wanted to redo it to tighten up the blends. I picked a lot of tracks that remind me of the deeper side of Detroit. This feeling went with what I was feeling during the time of being home and secluded from a lot of friends.

THE GIRLS ROOM

Zarina (Sarah Zarina Hakani) is a Shi'a Muslim multidisciplinary artist from Atlanta, GA, based in Brooklyn, NY. From MoMA PS1 to her friends' backyards, Zarina keeps things warm and playful through her hometown selections, blissed-out vocals, and unpredictable explosions.  

Recorded during Ramadan, this mix holds the complexity, nostalgia, and future-building power of the month. Zarina blends genres with power and purpose. Expect some electro, hard drums, bollywood, breaks, and more as you traverse through a soundscape that calls to the hypnotic stillness, textured reflection, and wacky celebration leading up to Eid. 

Zarina volunteers with @8ballcommunity, is the artist-in-residence at @risolab, co-founded @reconstructedmag, and a partner in party series @lifesavers_nyc.

Live At Garden Of Sol 06.25.16

Recorded on September 2nd, 2017 at ZeezOut Festival one record for one record in Amsterdam, this is truly one of the most memorable sets of the year. Two of the most prolific artists went back to back for three hours and we could not think of a better way to help usher in 2018.

New Brvtalism No. 124: Helena Hauff + Silent Servant (*Live in Amsterdam)

Happy to bring you this play differently set by Vutall! Had the chance to play with him in Madison and he really took the Model 1. 
Vutall has been a performing DJ since 2012 when he started playing a weekly 3 hour radio set for an online station called EVE Radio. Since then he has moved cities multiple times and experienced the music cultures of Tucson, LA, Portland, and now finally Madison WI which is where he calls home. He has a wide range of styles, though his primary love is harder techno with acid lines.

Model One Thoughts:
I have been dying to get hands on to play since this mixer was announced as being offered to consumers. I had a very brief 3 minute showroom demo once a year or so ago, and have studied the manual in an out countless times. I currently play on a Xone 92, and one of the ways I enjoy mixing on that is by using the filters instead of the EQ. However, you can only use one filter on each track on the 92, so being able to use both at the same time AND have a master filter on the Model One was like going from a moped to a superbike. I loved it! The parametric sculpting EQ was excellent to and very familiar to me since I do some production, live audio recording/engineering, and also run a front of house for sound systems. 

I think one of the features I liked the most outside of the filters was the overdrive. Theres this knob you can turn on each channel to reduce the headroom of that channel, which introduces analog clipping when you normally would not have it. This is something super cool because it creates a harmonic distortion and really changes the way your music is heard. On a technical level, you can warp a saw wave into a square wave on the fly, and that is incredibly neat and I think overlooked by a lot of first time users. I know I didn't use it nearly as much as I would have liked to!


About the set:
To me, nirvana is a place of tranquility. My set was heavily inspired by the Toyko techno from when they had their no dancing laws. That meant their music featured less emphasis on the kick and high hat but instead featured more rolling basslines to induce a hypnotic like state. Hypnosis generally goes hand in hand with meditation, which goes hand in hand with tranquility to me, so this is my expression of nirvana. I hope you enjoy!

This mix was recorded live from Reaktor's Katharsis event in 2017.  For those that don't know, Katharsis happens once a year and is dedicated to the faster, harder and more industrial side of techno.  This was my entire 3 hour set from that night.

Over the last few years we have built a steady relationship doing events together and sharing our passion for this music.  We are teaming up once again for ADE 2018 and releasing this mix as a thank you to all our followers and supporters.
