Born in Athens, Greek composer Zinovia Arvanitidi is most widely remembered as one half of the duo Pill-Oh in Vanishing Mirror as well as her debut solo The Gift of Affliction. Zinovia returns with her first solo modern classical undertaking titled Ivory, and like its precursors, further highlights her mastery in crafting piano ambiances of austere beauty and melancholia, led by mesmerizing melodies and evolving cinematic textures.

Fully self-produced, the now France-based composer navigates through her own time-memory universe with Debussy-like impressionistic daubs, but sublimely she draws the listener into a strangely familiar landscape where the past confronts the present - it is perhaps a dimension that exists within all of us. As the chapters unfold, memories are untangled as darkness shifts into light. The minimalistic nature of the early piano pieces are then transformed, lush and ornate with orchestral strings, subtle electronic atmospheres, field recordings and airy whispers. What makes Zinovia’s musical expression exquisite would perhaps be her use of the melodica, an instrument uncommon amongst the modern classical genre, that adds a contrasting depth to her harmonic palette.

An omnipresent sense of duality lingers throughout the album, as with the ivory and ebony colours of piano keys, or the birth and decay of seasons. This is a work where the artist has grasped the essence of the quote by Albert Camus: “There is a life and there is a death, and there are beauty and melancholy between”. The aural journey heightens, then subsides with a newfound serenity in closing, engaging the listener to invoke their own introspections on acceptance and healing.

Rooted in film and television (and represented by film composer agency Oticons among the names of Shigeru Umebayashi and Jan A.P Kaczmarek), Zinovia’s well-versed background in cinematic scoring manifests in her dexterity at veiling intricacies within each track that only unveil themselves with each subsequent listen. As a fully expanded realisation of Zinovia’s artistic voice, Ivory will resonate with fans who love Pill-Oh, and appeal to those familiar with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Dustin O’Halloran.

French photographer Aëla Labbé’s enigmatic cover art photography once again unifies with Zinovia’s soundscapes since her work for Vanishing Mirror.

Ever wondered what Omar Souleyman's band would sound like played through a gameboy?

The roots of the norwegian duo E▲SY  & C.O.U. (Center of the Universe) are based in the electronic funky sound called skweee, but expands it in many directions; oriental music, central asian music, balkan and even bhanghra. On the Ayayek Machine-album they are using vocals for the first time with the help of singer Zahangir Alam. Some of the tunes also include drums by Kjell-Olav Jørgensen from the krautrock cult-band Salvatore, and also the finnish electro-producer Mesak has been adding some flavours to the mix.

E▲SY  & C.O.U. is not just throwing exotic spice on a dry bread. This audio-børek is rather well-baked and spicy all the way through. As opposed to producers getting lost in introvert knobtwiddling, the band open up their windows to let the air from the outside world in.  
Where recent development in electronic music shows a tendency to bomb the listener with mashed sound, on this album it's taken to another direction: there is space to breathe, there is time to think and they're not trying to impress anyone making something too fast or too complex. 

While the music on Aryayek Machine is danceable and joyous, the title implicates a What if? A contrafactual musical history of what music would sound like if it persians invented the drum machine, or if the first synthesizer was made in Baku. The album is a hoax crystalball that reveals musical events that might happen in a different future.    

E▲SY (Jon Platou Selvig) was musically educated through various bands inspired by krautrock, dub and a strong focus on rhythms. He started playing solo in 2008 and is currently working with music for theatre and films. 

C.O.U. a.k.a Center of the Universe a.k.a. DJ Sissyfus (Jørgen Skjulstad) is a stayer in the norwegian DIY scene having released tons of music on his own Metronomicon Audio label and elsewhere.
