Most pleasurable activities, such as eating and sex, have clear links to survival. Such activities ultimately stimulate brain mechanisms that are specifically evolved to reward and encourage adaptive behaviors. Note that once brain mechanisms are in place that permit the experience of pleasure, it may be possible to stimulate those mechanisms in ways that do not confer a survival advantage. This behavior is called non-adaptive pleasure seeking.

From a purely biological point of view, we know that strong drugs do not serve any biological purpose at all; the only reason for their consumption is the corrupting effect that they have on the internal reward systems in the brains of those who consume then.

If we think of music as a drug, then it is a temptation even more difficult to avoid than a chemical drug. Absolutely no ingredients are required to make it other than the knowledge of what sounds to make. Melody comes from the voice, and rhythm can be provided by banging any number of objects together. And you have less choice about whether to "consume" it, because if someone nearby decides to start making music, then you are going to hear it.
But if music is a drug, which creates false feelings, why haven't we evolved resistance to it?

This is a reasonable question to ask. After all, we have been listening to music for at least 9,000 years, which should be long enough for some degree of resistance to evolve.
Propably we already have, so music used to be a much stronger drug than it is now. So strong that it corrupted our minds and distracted us fatally from solving life's problems. Perhaps so strong that it almost made the human species go extinct from self-neglect.
But now we have developed a partial resistance to this effect that music has on us. For whatever reason, the resistance is not total, and music continues to have emotional and pleasurable effects on us, but, these effects are but residual shadows of what music used to be.

“Frankfurt native Andreas Baumecker aka nd_baumecker began his DJ career in 1991 in a bar called Romantica, located near the city’s main train station. The venue was run by legendary nightlife impresario Hans Romanov, who also operated Intimbar, where Baumecker would eventually move on to a short time later. It’s there that Ata and Heiko M/S/O from Playhouse took notice, inviting Baumecker to work as a buyer for their record store Delirium and offering him a residency at their seminal WildPitchClub night at the Club Nachtleben. Soon, Baumecker was regularly playing Frankfurt’s numerous electronic music venues (Box, XS, Music Hall, Dorian Grey), before moving on to Heidelberg, where he promoted the club night HD800 together with Dirk Mantei aka D-Man. After a short stop in Mannheim, regular guest DJ sets at Berghain / Panorama Bar predecessor club OstGut in Berlin, and establishing his own label Freundinnen Audio, nd_baumecker moved to the German capital in 2004. There he not only picked up a residency at Panorama Bar inside the newly opened Berghain but also started a job as the club’s in-house booker.
Stylistically, Baumecker covers a truly broad spectrum of dance music, refusing to be limited by genre: "A well known choreographer once said: 'Surprise is important.’ I think this approach describes my DJ style best. I’m constantly oscillating between disco, house, techno, electro, broken beats and pop. Ultimately, I’m open to anything – from brute force to tender. I see the dance floor an experimental field: If you manage to really capture the crowd, you can do almost anything with them." Of course, the flow of tracks and resolving musical differences plays a key role in achieving just that, and few DJs are as adept at uniting fundamentally disparate sounds, different keys, different rhythms and different atmospheres. „If something sounds truly new to me they give me a jolt. Also, dance music should have a good portion of funk and, in a way, it needs to sound like disco, whatever the style. I like vocals a lot. In my opinion they are the most important and significant bits you’re taking home after a good night out; they’re the most memorable."
Since 2010 nd also produces with Sam Barker as Barker & Baumecker. The duo have released four 12”s and two albums on Ostgut Ton, operating musically between dancefloor and spiraling left field electronics. Finally, 2018 sees release of nd_baumecker’s Panorama Bar 07 DJ mix.”

Scots born DJ/producer Andrew Moore started off his music career as a camera man and editor for Glasgow based online electronic music magazine eqtv.dj where he filmed and interviewed the best DJs and club nights in Glasgow and around the world. He then started his DJ career after moving to London and working in the city’s underground queer scene putting on his own events.

Since moving to Berlin his career has gone from strength to strength with gigs at renowned clubs Tresor, Watergate, Kantine am Berghain, Griessmuehle, OHM, RSO, Æden, OXI, Club Ost, Hoppetosse, Fiese Remise, IPSE, Anomalie, Renate, House of Weekend, Corsica Studios to name a few and producing and releasing on various labels including BPitch Control and Scale Trax as well as his own show Keep it Hard on Keep it Radio!
