ARE WE THE RATS          no.1

Los Angeles is well-known for having some of the largest and most traveled freeways in the United States. This library captures the traffic ambience on the massive freeways that run through the Greater L.A. area including: US-101 (Hollywood Freeway), I-405 (San Diego Freeway), I-5 (Golden State Freeway), I-10 (Santa Monica Freeway), I-110 (Harbor Freeway), SR-134 (Ventura Freeway), and SR-2 (Glendale Freeway). 

Multiple perspectives were recorded, from close vehicle pass bys to distant traffic ambience captured from city parks, surrounding hillsides, tunnels and underpasses. Traffic types range from fast pass bys, to slow and congested traffic.

Sounds were captured with a Sanken CSS-5 Stereo Shotgun mic in both stereo mode (115 degree pickup area) and stereo wide mode (140 degree pickup area). The shotgun microphone was mounted in a full Rycote windshield kit and connected to a Sound Devices 702 recording at 192khz.

Commissioned by Danish performance group Hotel Pro Forma to write the music for their opera based on Charles Darwin and his book 'On the Origin of the Species', The Knife decided to make this a collaborative process, working with artists Mt. Sims and Planningtorock for the first time, to capture the huge width of the Darwin and evolution theme.

INFO/BIO:

This album features original music by Joe Wallace (who is half of Binary Partners and all of Paisley Babylon)using Theremin and vintage analog synths along with other toys, plus extensive use of found sound, location recordings and field recordings done specifically for the album. 

Wallace, who lives and records in Chicago, also relies heavily on turntables, thrift store and dollar bin vinyl records that have been mashed up, mutilated, used and abused for purposes of satire, reporting and political commentary as described in the U.S. Copyright Office Fair Use guidelines.

This album features a wide range of re-purposed recorded material on vinyl--twisted, narrow-minded, bigoted, naughty, pornographic, educational and instructional vinyl records to achieve it's smirking, fourteen-year-old-boy humor ends. Though in some cases these recordings can actually be a bit touching in spite of adolescent snickering about "boners" and being "really naked".

Texas Turntable Massacre's sole member is Joe Wallace, who has been abusing vinyl in this way for many years but has only now attempted to spread his brain rot to others. This project is based in Chicago but Wallace plans to tour with this material to sonically damage other unsuspecting vinyl buffs and create maximum audio havoc along the way.

They Walk Among Us

This track is 100% trumpet.  Yes - the trumpet has been very processed, but no synths are used.  When I finished this track, I sent it to Dirk Serries (Vidna Obmana / Fear Falls Burning) and he asked to recycle it - from there it was picked up by The Foundry label for a pressed cd project to be released.  Saul Stokes, M. Bentley, and Vir Unis also remixed the raw trumpet tracks into new interpretations and I took all of their remixes and created a final track.  This was released in 2003 - and I'll put it back up for sale on CD Baby this summer as The Foundry closed it's doors after more than a decade of releases.

Everything is Awful

I am a label owner, producer, and recording artist based in Springfield, Illinois. My work includes a variety of projects, including Journeys Into Sound, Paisley Babylon, Texas Turntable Massacre, Binary Partners, and Fire Brigade. 

Theremin. Moog. Sir Alec "Obi-Wan Kenobi" Guinness talks baby eating. A horribly out-of-context Rev. Jimmy Swaggart shrieks about sex and bondage. Creepy subterranean voices whispering in your ear. The acid-less flashback. Bargain bin vinyl and thrift store LPs abused beyond what is permitted by law. This is the experience you get courtesy of the evil-minded Texas Turntable Massacre album "Donner Party Hungry" and other releases by Texas Turntable Massacre.
