"The core of Fredrik is the duo of Fredrik Hultin and Ola Lindefelt, a pair of Malmö-based musicians who also happened to form the band the LK. The music they create on Na Na Ni, however, is quite a different animal from that group's buzzy electronic pop, applying the same ear for sonic detail and an unerring penchant for melody to a more folk-inflected and more resolutely understated set of compositions. The results are nothing short of enchanting, using a consistent, gently evocative sound palette -- Hultin's acoustic guitars, voice, and accordion, and Lindefelt's bells, drums, cello, and delicately wheezy electronics -- to balance deceptively complex, layered arrangements with a charming, lo-fi intimacy. March-like singalong "Black Fur" opens the album on an especially cheery note, which is taken up more modestly on the calmer but amply catchy "Alina's Place" (whose poetically cryptic lyrics make it somewhat less reassuring) -- no less winsome, though, are the more abstract instrumental pieces which make up half of the track list. The title of one, "Angora Sleepwalking," succinctly captures the softness and sweet, dreamlike strangeness of the prevailing mood; another, "Morr," intentionally or not provides a clue to Hultin's musical aesthetic, suggesting their similarities to the less overtly electronic end of that German label's output, and the work of Múm in particular. One might also draw comparisons to the gentle, textural experiments of Silje Nes, or, to name some non-Scandinavians, the fractured folk of Animal Collective, Tunng's woodsy whimsy, and even Sufjan Stevens' antiquarian-minded indie pop. Fans of any of these artists would do well to investigate Hultin's fine debut; they will discover not just a handful of hummable songs, but a curious and comforting sound world that's at once familiar and unique unto itself. Also worth noting is the Kora Records' elegant package design, which makes Na Na Ni a joy of a thing to hold, and the appropriately intriguing booklet etchings by Warren Hilt."

The REANIMATOR sat frozen in his chair, held spellbound by the stygian gaze of his newest creation. Within the onyx depths of her eyes there was something new, something different, a quality not present in his other works. As she began to rise, he studied her movements with a mix of pride and abject terror. Before him stood his greatest creation, a life truly brought back from beyond that most final veil. She did not lurch with the brutish inhumanity of her predecessors, but rather her movements flowed with a equally inhuman grace that transcended her monstrous form. Her pallid skin and jet black hair projected an aura of unnatural beauty, taboo and forbidden by nature of her construction, yet still undeniable in its existence. Though she did not speak, there was an intent within her gaze. It was cold & alien, dipping into the edge of human comprehension but not truly existing within it. It was this aspect that set the fear surging within him. His other creations had by comparison been parodies of life, their animalistic wants and desires well within his ability to control. It was clear this was no longer the case. The meeting of their gaze created a palpable tension, a physical collision of analogous thought. The pair regarded each other as duelists, testing, probing, each searching for a moment of weakness hidden beneath the blank demeanor of their foe. Slowly, the REANIMATOR began to regain his strength, rising from his chair with newfound courage. This courage dissolved once more as he watched his creation rise in mimicry, his own movements mirrored upon her body like a marionette but for one difference. A wry grin spread slowly across her lips, illuminating that this was not merely mimicry, but mockery instead. The REANIMATOR took one step back, then another, before finally flinging himself towards his tools, fanatically searching amongst them for any that would offer salvation from the eldritch horror he had created. He turned, lashing out with a scalpel held in his trembling hand. The blade bit into the cheek of his creation as he marred her uncanny beauty in an admission of his own failure. For a brief moment, the REANIMATOR saw something new within her onyx eyes, a pain wrought by the betrayal of he who had given her a simulacrum of life. He faltered in momentary regret, empathetic of the pain which he had inflicted until he too felt a pain upon himself. Gone from his hand was the means of his betrayal, and upon his coat there lay a stain. Across his neck, a gash spread slowly, just as his creation’s grin had moments before. This time however, the slow spread of such a line was indicative not of the budding existence of a life but of the creeping end of one. His strength faltering, the REANIMATOR looked once more into the eyes of his creation. Gone was the look of pained betrayal, replaced once more by that cold & inhuman gaze. Delivered by the hand of his own work to the level of the clay from which he wrought his creations, the REANIMATOR fell to the ground with finality.
