Photay’s debut self-titled EP has met critical acclaim and bigger praise than his afro pictured on the album cover. Having garnered international support from artists and curators like Gilles Peterson, Daedelus, Bonobo and Shinichi Osawa, the young producer has had a meteoric rise, with much more to come.

To celebrate this achievement, we reached out to like-minded musicians and producers to reinterpret the record's nine tracks. The result is a blend of styles, each rooted in a common enthusiasm for the original material, while boldly reimagining its potential.

West America are a two piece band from Porridge Radio are a band from West America is a solo project with a backing band but now Porridge Radio is female fronted punk rock but not pretentious like West America is just some people having fun and feeling Porridge Radio is West America.

Porridge Radio became best friends with West America through soundcloud and they have waded through Porridge Radio in order to collaborate on an EP that West America made half of and Porridge Radio also made half of West America play guitar music a bit like Porridge Radio who reworked 4 of the 'i'm not sure any more' demo LP songs with The Cosmic Sadness in order to create this collab EP with West America who we all love very much because the internet makes friends of Porridge Radio and West America who both made the artwork but Porridge Radio says that it's only good because of West America.

This ain’t another gaggle of bearded southern sons fleeing their collective suburban upbringings and collegiate music education. There aren’t the usual clichés about drinking, honkytonks, and heartbreak. These are, after all, the same Black Lips who rescued the waning garage punk subgenre by not sounding or dressing their musical predecessors. The trick is to make a confession entertaining. A Private Picture, the debut album by Chicago’s Fran, delivers a collection of extremely personal experiences that have been distilled and abstracted to the point that you can see yourself in their imagery, find analogs to your own emotional history in their scenarios –when you hear them, it’s a conversation. It’s therapy, if therapy was allowed to turn you on and make you shake what you got. At its core, Fran’s music is about sharing a truth -–telling it, confessing it, yelling it—in the service of human connection. Or, as Jacobson puts it, “I feel that I am a songwriter for the same reason I wanted to be an actor. I want to tell the truth. I want to challenge myself to get closer and closer to the core of an experience, an emotion- I want to say it, sing it, in a way that says exactly what it is. I cry when I write songs because I am constantly making discoveries, about myself, about the world, about the best way to convey and connect and get closer.”

The cadence of the song is kind of based on a bear hunting poem that my granddaddy, Bobby Earl's brother, used to recite to me. This is an ode to my elders." Jared Swilley

Atlanta underground rock provocateurs Black Lips reveal video for new single ‘Rumbler’ from their new album ‘Sing In A World That’s Falling Apart’.
 
Boasting an unapologetic southern-fried twang, the twelve track collection marks the quintet’s most pronounced dalliance with country music yet, with a clang and harmony that is unmistakably the inimitable sound and feel of the Black Lips. While the songcraft and playing is more sophisticated, Black Lips were determined to return to the raw sound roots that marked their early efforts. Recorded and co-produced with Nic Jodoin at Laurel Canyon’s legendary, newly reopened Valentine Recording Studios (which played host to Beach Boys and Bing Crosby before shuttering in 1979) without Pro-Tools and other contemporary technology, the band banged the album out directly to tape quickly and cheaply, resulting in their grimiest, most dangerous, and best collection of songs since the aughts.

The band’s stylistic evolution and matured approach to musicianship and writing is, in part, due to the seismic line-up shifts they have undergone over the last half decade. Worn down after a decade of prolific touring and recording, longtime guitarist Ian St Pé left the group in 2014, followed shortly thereafter by original drummer Joe Bradley. Jeweller/actress (and now Gucci muse) Zumi Rosow, whose sax skronk, flamboyant style, and wild stage presence had augmented the team before the duo’s departure, assumed a bigger writing and performance role in their absence. Soon drummer Oakley Munson from The Witnesses brought a new backbeat and unique backing vocal harmony into the fold. Last year the quintet was rounded out by guitarist Jeff Clarke of Demon’s Claws. The newly forged partnership, all of whom collaborate as songwriters, vocalists, and instrumentalists, has breathed new life into their sound. The result is akin to the radiance of the impulsive, wild nights where you find yourself two-stepping into the unknown.
 
‘Sing In A World That’s Falling Apart’ is released 24th January via Fire Records/Vice on limited edition red vinyl with die cut sleeve, standard LP and CD.
