Equal parts producer and composer, Son Lux (aka Ryan Lott) bridges an unusual gap between old-world music discipline and next-level experimentation. Meditative but heaving with energy, Lanterns finds a peculiar congruency between futuristic soul and ancient sentiment. Driving orchestral pop (Lost It To Trying, No Crimes) is placed alongside haunting minimalism (Pyre, Enough Of Our Machines), often starkly juxtaposing densely layered arrangements with Lott's intimate voice. 
 
In recent past Son Lux has gained notoriety both for his s/s/s project (with Sufjan Stevens and Serengeti), and for being named NPR's "Best New Artist of the Year". His third full-length album, and his first for Joyful Noise, positions Son Lux at the helm of an impressive ensemble of instrumentalists and singers, including Chris Thile (The Punch Brothers), Peter Silberman (The Antlers), DM Stith, Lily & Madeleine, Darren King (Mutemath), Ieva Berberian (Gem Club) and yMusic (Dirty Projectors, Bon Iver).

Info:

Ian M Hazeldine records under the alias Antonymes, hailing from Hawarden, a small village in North Wales, whose most famous inhabitant was William Ewart Gladstone. He creates atmospheric melodies, using various pianos, celesta, strings, church organ and field recordings, and has had releases on Soundcolours, Cathedral Transmissions, Hidden Shoal, Time Released Sound and Rural Colours.

With a long standing interest in music making and active listening, Hazeldine works with any influences, from his surrounding landscape to the artists he has worked with. His compositions often take on a semi-improvised structure with accidental atmospheres used as a starting point. As well as his own projects, Hazeldine also works with Marconi Union's Richard Talbot, under the name Prospector. He also works as a graphic designer, film maker and photographer, having art directed many of the Hibernate releases including our critically acclaimed vinyl series, and has worked with many other artists and labels including Facture, Field Rotation and Olan Mill.

In late 2009 Antonymes released 'Beauty Becomes the Enemy of the Future' on Cathedral Transmissions of which the CD is now unavailable. Since then he has revisited the album, which has culminated a new release, 'There Can Be No True Beauty Without Decay'. Hazeldine's own reworkings are intertwined with those of friends Ian Hawgood, Isnaj Dui, Offthesky, Field Rotation, Wil Bolton, Spheruleus and James Banbury to create an album of captivating melancholy and beauty. The guest reworkings venture into other, darker territories, where one might be harder pressed to identify the original material.

The sleeve features beautiful images of the North Wales landscape by Richard Outram, fitting the music perfectly.

After the rain there will always be the sun

With the highly acclaimed Distilled and Distilled Live behind him on the renowned Naim Jazz label, Manchester guitarist and composer Stuart McCallum is probably best known for his work with Cinematic Orchestra. The distinctive, ethereal and atmospheric sound of his guitar has been at the heart of their sound since 2004, including on the albums 'Ma Fleur' and 'Live At The Royal Albert Hall' and the award winning soundtrack ‘The Crimson Wing’. 

In 2012 he was commissioned by the British Council to compose and record a piece of music for the Musicity project in Tokyo. The music would be available for people to listen to and download via smart phones at various listening posts as part of the Roppongi Art Night Festival (an annual all-night art festival started in 2009). Inspired by the Roppongi district, McCallum created the track The Seventh Tree, which is now available as a free single download. The single features Cinematic Orchestra band mates Phil France on bass and Luke Flowers on drums.

An epic and beautiful piece of music, The Seventh Tree refers to the growth and destruction of Roppongi which was reputedly built around six trees, all of which have now been destroyed. The Seventh Tree is a compelling track that gets under the skin: reflective and yet powerful, with two contrasting sections re-imagined in different instrumentations and textures. The Seventh Tree plays like a speeded up film of Roppongi’s history  - it’s destruction during the Second World War and its subsequent growth into what is now a vibrant commercial district. 

His 2011 album Distilled was described as “dreamy, trippy, downtempo instrumentals” (Uncut) and “a thing of breathtaking beauty” (All About Jazz) and perhaps most pertinent to The Seventh Tree “delivered with a cinematic sweep” (Manchester Evening News). Influenced by jazz and DJ culture, McCallum’s music is a distillation of many influences, creating a sound that is concentrated and distinctive.
