"It was the hot summer of 1984. In a magazine we found an article about a unique car, the “Pangolina”, assembled by a self-taught soviet engineer. It was a daring response to the cool supercars seen in the action movies on the vhs-tapes. The next day we started manufacturing it and after a while it was already parked on our backyard. We fastened our seat belts, turned the ignition key and headed for the coast. While our car was flying along the coastline, South Bay was already waiting for us. Foot down the pedal, and “Pangolina” rushed over the horizon and dissolved into sunset."

Los Angeles independent record label founder and multi-instrumentalist, Wylie Cable, is back with the new album Shimmer, Then Disappear. The record releases September 25th on Cable's imprint Dome of Doom and is the 8th full-length in his catalog. The compositional formats across the 40 minute album are dense and dynamic, bursting with heavy rhythms, crystalized harmonies, soothing breakdowns, and technical finesse. IDM, downtempo, lofi house, 808 filled trap, LA-centric beats, musique concrète, drum ‘n bass, jungle, modern classical; it’s an encyclopedia of 21st century sound that interlaces Cable’s musical voice with distinction and purpose. In this context, the album acts as one of the artists’ most realized works in musical range. Features across Shimmer, Then Disappear include a number of artists connected to the Dome of Doom family: God Damn Chan, Holly, Call Me and Goodnight Cody. Cable mixed the entire LP, with mastering from Daddy Kev at Cosmic Zoo Studios. Album artwork was completed by Dewey Saunders, an artist internationally known for album cover work with Anderson Paak, Future, Nxworries, Felly, Griz, and more.

Anyone tuning into Jah-Monte’s music at this point should know what they’re letting themselves in for, but for the uninitiated I’ll break it down. The short version: this is another tour de force of rap excellence, masterminded by the hardest-working hometown hero in rap history.

Now for the long version: this is yet another killer seven track release that condenses the very greatest aspects of the Lord’s music into a glorious fifteen minutes. What’s more, this might actually be his most versatile project yet. The second side of Seventy-Fifth & Amsterdam is familiar territory, as we get an epic two part song (‘Benefits from Mutual Relationships’) featuring a verse from fellow Charlotte artist FLLS and a bonus cut produced by Australian hip-hop legend Timepiece (who also mastered the entire the project).

Side A includes plenty of the sample-based production that fans have grown to love about Lord Jah-Monte Ogbon’s music, but it also creates a more urgent, paranoid atmosphere than almost anything else in the rapper’s discography. ‘Half Moon Bklyn Performance’ is an incredibly satisfying track, as crunchy drums courtesy of AXNT collide with Jah-Monte’s unparalleled charisma. ‘Fuck My Old Plug I Wish You Well Though’ sees the Charlotte MC rap in a way that I don’t think I’ve ever heard before, the novelty of experiencing the rapper’s performance on a quasi-trap instrumental alone makes this release a very unique one within his constantly expanding catalogue.
