Spectrum march head-first into 2022 with this dark matter platter from one of Manchester's most respected DJs: Jozef K.

Following releases on the likes of True Romance, Rawax, Last Night On Earth and Frau Blau, Jozef maintains the spotlight heat with his debut on the label founded by one of his biggest influences.

'I remember I closed an event DJing after Joris Voorn when I was 19 in Manchester,' says Jozef. 'It was surreal; I had watched him playing a few times previously and was completely awestruck to play after him when I was basically a little kid.'

Now 32 and really hitting his stride, Jozef lands on Spectrum with a distinctive, discerning minimal sound. 'These two 2 tracks are an accurate representation of where I am at musically at the moment - dystopian, hypnotic and atmospheric.'

We couldn't put it better ourselves. Stripped right back to the most mesmerising elements, tailored for deep mix creativity or those magic 4am moments, we suspect this isn't the last we'll see of Jozef on Spectrum.

A million thoughts, memories and plans swirled round her head. She found it hard to live in the moment; always focused on the future or the past. In her opinion there was little to be gained from the present, she'd rather focus on what the future might or might not hold, even if it meant missing everything that was currently going on around her. Her hopes for what the years to come looked like were generally unrealistic, but she couldn't find any satisfaction in the here and now. 

Madrid's Sungate has been home to artists like Skudge, Trømmel and Rosati, to name but a few, and now they're welcoming two artists for a collaborative EP: Manchester producer Jozef K and acid aficionado Tin Man. Both have been making moves solo, Jozef with releases for the likes of Rawax, Lost City Archives and Firehouse, and Tin Man on Global A Records, Acid Test and Absurd Recordings. Of course the core of the release, Perfect & Nice Acid, is centred around the futuristic acid sounds both are no stranger to, with remixes on the flip from Voiski, Evigt Mörker and Moy Santana.

Jozef K & Winter Son are a formidable force. 'Smiling Through Wide Eyes' on Skint Records emphasises their capabilities. Remix duty has been handed to Swedish duo Mr Tophat & Art Alfie and Berlin­ based Argy.

Jozef K & Winter Son explained of the EP, “[it’s an] old school record made in homage to UK rave culture. Expect drum breaks, rave pianos and bass,” accentuated by the lyric, ‘ We make this prayer to you.” 'Smiling Through Wide Eyes' commences the release with an unstoppable energy that wouldn't sound out of place in the bygone parties of The Haçienda, awash with loopy horns, piano and vocals. The heady 'Starlight In Another World' is framed by a scattered female vocal, craving the magic of those early hours. Mr. Tophat & Art Aflie add a heavier edge with their remix of ' Smiling Through Wide Eyes', whilst Argy spirals the energy levels with his high­ powered remix.

Manchester born Jozef K started his DJ career at the most established club of his home city, Sankeys at just 19 years old. Moving towards the present day, he is now resident of the global brand. Fellow Mancunian, Winter Son i s famed for his love of drum machines and percussion pads. Between them they have released on Kim Ann Foxman’s Firehouse Recordings, One Records, Rebirth and Hush Hush.

Mr Tophat & Art Alfie a re both DJ’s and producers, whilst also co­founding Karlovak Recordings. Greek in origin, Argy first rose to fame with the 2005 anthem ‘Love Dose’, one of the biggest tracks of that year. Fast forward 16 years and he has released on Defected, Objektivity and Cocoon and set up the label These Days.

Welcoming Jozef K to the label once more to drop his biggest release yet. A solid four tracker including a remix from Mathias Schober.

The first track of the EP 'By Love, They Will Quench The Fire Of Hate', takes no prisoners, the slow build to the drop keeps you captivated throughout the entire track. Following up is the fast rolling drums and the infectious tribal undertones of 'Con Mala Mar'.

The last of the originals is the hypnotic 'Forgotten Angel' with an intriguing melody that comes and goes throughout the track all building to a momentous drop.

Finally, Mathias Schober closes out the EP with his Bass Tool Remix of the final track.

The release takes you on a journey of sound exploration and starts off our 2019 perfectly.

"Inward Spiral" is taken from "Explorations 09", the latest offering in @Anjunadeep's acclaimed compilation series and it's Manchester producer @jozef-k label debut. The track is an airy arrangement of subtle sounding synthwork that plays like magic against the backdrop of stuttering claps and organic percussion, the track seems to be perfectly aimed at both dancefloors and sun-drenched festival grounds.

"I am inspired by all art that I am exposed to: from architecture to paintings to film and of course music - so it is quite hard to pinpoint a singular example.  I use artistic influences combined with my mood in the studio that day, so basically it was inspired by my whole life to that point, which I guess sounds slightly ridiculous but also very true. I felt there was an ethereal, introspective quality to the record, hence the title." - Jozef K

Jon Dasilva & Jozef K deliver two separate mixes of their composition ‘Maresme’. A dreamy hypnosis defined by its distinctive, warm bassline.

Jon Dasilva draws on some early leftfield trance and acid sounds. Spaced out drones and reverberating drum hits float across that memorable bassline, jazzy chords and psychedelic synths. The track builds in an entirely different way, forming a perfect late-night set opener with its expert use of arrangement.
 
Jozef K’s Manchester Mix is an acid-tinged progression, developing a hypnotic groove from the first kick. The shimmering Roland 303 acid top-line and nostalgic, delayed rave stabs draw on memories from early years of acid house warehouse raves across the U.K. and Manchester’s own seminal institution the Haçienda. Dreaming pads float aloft, racing claps build and subtle arpeggios give the track its distinctive sound.
