An affection to vinyl at an early stage is most probably the best precondition to become somebody finally ending up playing those vinyls for people. Somebody with a musical background. Somebody picking the right record at the right time. Somebody serving and educating people at the same time. Somebody being called a DJ. 

This fascination for records, starting in the mid 80's as a collector, and later on in the early 90's as a DJ still is burns with Alex from deep inside. After years of touring th world, from Europe to Australia, Asia to America and back and all over again, and playing at countless clubs and festivals with a complex, digital setup, Alex decided to return to vinyl as a statement and confession to the basic art of Djing. Why? Because he can. And because of the fact that it`s the music that counts. It has to be seleced by the DJ, carefully curated and played on spot. It`s the music which has the impact on the visitors of the club or festival so that their reaction scales the intensity of this particular experience. It ́s the music which is the key element for a good performace and which has to be supported by a good, powerful soundsystem, a fitting surrounding and the technical way it is.

Our favorite studio rat handed us a very special DJ set, where she plays exclusively her own music, mainly unreleased tracks she wrote in the last 12 months, showcasing just how wide her production range is. Wallis is one of a kind, and writes techno that speaks to the soul. Her music is for dancefloors but comes straight from the heart. Not many are the techno producers with this kind of catalogue, and even rarer are the die-hard innovators, looking to twist and bend techno into new forms like her. 

Being different and pushing boundaries in our social-media-driven world is sometimes punished by the algorithms, but artists like Wallis remind us that creativity and art is something still worth striving and fighting for.

Erwin is a Berlin-based producer and DJ, formerly known as Florian Rietze. His music moves between hypnotic grooves and subtle atmospheres. Sometimes driving, sometimes introspective, always with a keen sense for tension and depth. With Arepas Records, he now launches his own label, kicking things off with the debut release Arepas 001, a statement for carefully crafted and detail-driven electronic music.

To mark the start, Erwin visited our pressing plant at MATTER OF FACT, where he sat down with our head of operations, Andre Kronert, to talk about his motivation for starting a label, his love for vinyl as a physical medium, and his vision of making Arepas a platform for artistic freedom and curated sound. We’ll celebrate this new chapter together on October 8th with the official Label Launch Party at Elevate, Cinthie’s record store in the heart of Berlin-Friedrichshain, where music, community, and the idea behind Arepas Records truly come to life.

I uploaded the first 90 minutes minutes of my six-hour set at Giselle Düsseldorf. It was the first gig after my collarbone surgery and was unsure how djing would feel. But the doubts were unfounded and I am grateful to had this great start after my break. 

I started with some Dub Track and tried to build up the vibe gently.

Ihr kennt ihn vielleicht noch unter dem Namen Schotoné. Der DJ und Produzent aus Rostock startet seit kurzem als Yune durch und hat seinen langjährigen Freund Jr. Senior mit an Bord geholt.
Im Stil sind sie durchaus flexibel, doch fließt  hauptsächlich Techno durch ihre Venen. In unserem neuen Hörsturz-Podcast stellen die beiden durchaus eindrucksvoll unter Beweis, dass sie in ihrem gemeinsamen Projekt harmonieren und solide überzeugen. Wir finden, das passt wie die Faust aufs Auge, wie die Snare zur Kick oder einfach wie Arsch auf Eimer.

One of the guests in Rostock's concrete lady (Kraftwerk/UKW), who delighted me the most with his story telling and his hypnotic drifting mix, definitely is Arnaud Le Texier. Inspiriert durch verschiedenste DJ's aus Rostock und der Welt startete Der Klient 2008 selbst mit dem Mixen. Er durchwanderte viele Genre's bis er schlussendlich bei den deepen, groovigen und gefühlvollen Tönen der House und Technomusik landete. 2011 gründete er die jeden Sonntag erscheinende Podcastserie "Deep Afternour", wo er viele tolle Künstler wie z.B. Andrey Pushkarev, Lula Circus, Nadja Lind, Die Vogelperspektive uvm. bislang für gewinnen konnte. Entspanntes Abzappeln mit ner ordentlichen Kelle gute Laune ist garantiert.

Mario a.k.a. Jr. Senior is djing for more than 15 years now and is  a regular guest on decks in Rostock's (north east germany) subculture scene. But also transregional gigs, as in clubs and on events like BKI and Wasserschaden/Hamburg, on the MS Stubnitz or on the Pütnitz Festival are among his recent stations as dj.

Combine well tried with young and fresh ideas! That is how to discribe Jr. Senior's musical philosophy the shortest way. So it is no surprise, that this attitude also has been inspiration for his project name. Trying to pigeonhole the "young senior" couldn't become that easy. And he's celebrating it again and again with his varied mixes. But a common theme is part yet in all his well selected tracks. From wonderful deep down to flaring up,  percussive rhythms; his fascination for crispy hi hats, attractive breaks and lots of pressure down below are shaping his way of selecting music.
Driven by constantly new input and most diverse musical influences, the senior will gives us lots more for ears and legs, for sure...
