Chantal Michelle continues her sound explorations with 66 Rue L, a fascinating composition for piano, field recordings, saxophones and tin drum, collaborating closely with legendary Mexican instrumentalist and improviser Germán Bringas. Split into three movements, 66 Rue L traces a sonic pathway on which reverberant piano, Bringas’s saxophone and resonant field recordings intertwine to soporific, transportive effect. Close to 30 minutes in length, the composition traverses between calming and unsettling passages, as Michelle toys with the listeners’ perceptions and expectations, expertly steering the piece into unexpected territories. 66 Rue L follows Chantal Michelle’s solo releases for Quiet Time, Dinzu Artefacts and Somewhere Press and an album made with Brian Allen Simon as Pétra for Injazero Records.

We’re pleased to announce the release of the JrF c-series+ contact microphones, alongside some small batch versions in different colour combinations.

when my daughter, the artist Pheobe riley Law, started to collaborate on building JrF microphones she began thinking about colour, influenced by listening through the mics to trees, plants, insects (inc. ladybirds, hence the cadmium versions) and city surfaces.

The c-series contact microphones are already used by thousands of artists, recordists, sound designers and ecoacoustic researchers so we’re keeping all the good things about that design. Indeed the hand built elements used for the c-series are as good as this technology can get, with the widest frequency range on the market & are also used in the c-series+ mics.

"Morse code is a method used in telecommunication to encode text characters as standardized sequences of two different signal durations."

This track was composed for the Full Orchestra's sample challenge of February 2024.
The whole track revolves around the idea of rhythm play of short and long duration sounds, trying to mimic the two impulsions used in morse code.
To do so I extracted a part of the original sample that sounded like a synth pad and sliced it more and more rythmically as the song progresses to bring what sounded like an ambient sample into the Braindance/IDM musical territory.

Study no.1 is guided by the principle of symmetry. The central spot of the composition is in the middle of the room - half the way on both horizontal X- and Z-axis. Each object always moves through both halves of at least one of the X- or Z-planes. The element which is being doubled, is followed by the same-pace movement of the element on the opposite side of the axis, but the movement is being reversed: element no.6 positioned on Z-4 goes from X-5 to X+5 while at the same time in the same speed element no.7 at Z+4 goes from X+5 to X-5. 
There are three elements which are the musical nucleus of the composition (1, 2, 3). These sounds are airy (noisy) but they have a recognisable pitch and form a minor triad. All other elements are tuned to these three elements which define the tonal center of the piece. This kind of interpretation of the harmonic aspect of the composition, parallels the interpretation of ‘symmetrical’ in spatial domain.
