Egyptian artist Hassan Abou Alam delivers the 4-track EP Ice, glistening with unusual textures that glide through several soundscapes spanning techno, breaks, bass and unclassifiable noise.

Things get spooky on ‘Hollow In C#’ as Hassan pairs a reverb-heavy vocal with chugging drums and eerie pads, echoing his mental and physical state during quarantine last year. Freaky but fierce.

Hassan Abou Alam has spent the last decade exploring disparate sound palettes and genres, from breaks to techno to bass. Today, his curiosity is unwavering. Hassan produces music using a hybrid setup of analog and digital instruments, conveying organised but compelling chaos that’s won him legions of fans worldwide.

PREMIERE: Hassan Abou Alam - Hollow in C# [Nehza Records]

Infa Red Recordings present their second release by Copenhagen-based artist Muskila, a nimble two-tracker that follows on perfectly from Bluetoof’s debut for the label earlier this year.

The title track ‘Bateekh’ is a heavily percussive roller, which teams up a combination of traditional darbuka drums and driving breakbeats, the former an ode to Muskila’s roots. His heritage is further echoed in the titling of the release, which translates to “watermelon”, a symbol of the resistance of the Palestinian people.

The B-side ‘Hayvan’ compliments the title track with similar percussive rhythms, this time set at a more scatterbrained 150bpm, with deranged, evolving melodies that build to a huge crescendo of drums before settling into a satisfyingly dubby lull.
