So have some entertainment with my version, which was from its instrumentation reduced to guitar bass and drums only and later extended with keyboards, which I find gives this song a much more dramatic note.

I feel blessed to be able to keep Alpha Roots’ vibe shining bright for the SoundCloud community to continue to enjoy. 

Alpha Roots sent me these reggae bass and rhythm guitar stem a long time ago, maybe even three years ago in 2016 (bad couch, bad couch)! I originally planned on having Evelyn (of the Reiki Run Rampant tracks on my page) sing over the rhythm but then I moved from Santa Cruz to Portland and she moved from the Pacific Northwest to Santa Cruz, bummer! So the stems sat in my hard drive until new inspiration arrived in the form of Johnny Minstrel, one of favorite song writers on SoundCloud, agreeing to write lyrics and sing over the track. Once Johnny added his deep felt lyrics and magical vocal chords to the mix, the rest of the song came together pretty quickly for me, lol! I often try to put together virtual bands for my tracks and I knew I had to have Jamie Rhind on the track since he worked with Alphio on multiple songs and a reunion was due. I always wanted to work with Jonathan Beckenstein, whose sensitive and thoughtful guitar work is always sublime. Darren and Russ came naturally.  My original drum production work was based on an old Sly Dunbar sample (I like to include the essence of some of my favorite artists in the tracks I work on) but the quality of the drums just wasn’t up to Russ’ standards, hahaha, so we brought Bitzone on board to lay down some drums and voila, roots reggae magic!

Big thanks to the band for coming together on this in fine fashion! Big ups to the SoundCloud community and the spirit of collaboration. Keep on digging! 

And massive thanks to Wou-Wou to bringing his visual arts talent to the project! My goal is to eventually put together a reggae album (possibly a double album which will also include some reggae collaborations between Alpha Roots and friends including Jamie Rhind and Russ Sinfield) with all profits going to the Cancer Research Institute. Be on the look out for a possible dub version of Red Earth Clay as well!!!

Hailing from Brooklyn, JKriv (real name: Jason Kriveloff) is a producer, DJ, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, co-label head of Razor-N-Tape Records, and co-producer/guitarist of live disco band Escort. Throughout his illustrious musical career which spans nearly 20 years, his tracks have garnered plays from superstar DJ’s such as Disclosure, Derrick Carter, and Pete Tong. As a DJ himself, he’s shared bills with the likes of Todd Terje, Session Victim, and Dimitri from Paris just to name a few. JKriv’s experience playing in bands translates over to his solo work, as he takes an organic approach to production, playing analog instruments (guitar, bass, keyboards, synth) on many of his releases. His catalog is extensive and showcases his seemingly effortless knack for blending modern and vintage club-oriented sounds.

His latest release is “Aguaxirê”, the title track of his upcoming three-track EP of the same name coming out on Rocksteady Disco on May 17th. Kriv utilizes an array of synthesizers and samplers on “Aguaxirê” to lay out the melodies, Afro-Brazilian rhythms and vocal samples heard throughout the 9-minute track. He enlists professional trumpeter, and fellow Escort band-mate Nathan Warner to deliver the lush trumpet section of his brilliant horn arrangement. JKriv could not have chosen a better label than Rocksteady Disco to release his EP. Rocksteady Disco is a Detroit-based boutique record label and party series founded in 2014 by Peter Croce. The label has steadily released Disco, House, and Techno cuts tinged with African and Brazilian influences over the last five years. Rocksteady Disco states that it aims to take its listeners on a “life-affirming journey that engages the heart, body and mind” and its latest release “Aguaxirê” does exactly that.

The track opens with the moody chords that underlie its entirety. Then comes the vocal sample, which JKriv selects and blends in exquisitely. It features a call and response style vocal in a foreign language which sounds like an African dialect. It matches the vibe of his emotionally striking instrumental almost too well. The exotic rhythms are the backbone of the song, constantly driving it forward, but when the acid bassline comes in at around the halfway point, “Aguaxirê” really starts to take flight. Six minutes into the song, Warner’s live trumpeting comes in and the track soars. It’s an epic climax that JKriv built up to gradually and masterfully. Expect to hear “Aguaxirê” out more than once this summer. Pre-order your copy here!

“Invocation” is the debut EP of Budapest born and Berlin based producer, pianist and multi-instrumentalist Àbáse. Seven pieces of instrumental artistry, each one channeling a musical journey of its own, inviting the listener to a personal trip of emotions. Àbáse recorded most tracks with two drummers and two bass players playing simultaneously, a flute player, a percussionist and himself playing Rhodes and synths. Along the “base” band, there are several guest artists from different continents and backgrounds, adding their majestic contribution.
The first track of Invocation, which goes by the same name as the record (“Invocation”) has Brazilian percussionist Roque Miguel as a special guest, with whom Àbáse worked on new material during his stay in Rio de Janeiro and Salvador de Bahia. 

“Get Off Di Floor” is a afro-funk track which has a brass section and a guitarist, as an addition to the core band. It’s a take on the classic afrobeat “big band” arrangement, an environment different than the rest of the EP, where Àbáse proves again his artistic versatility.

This record was created in a live recording session set up with Àbáse’s home-band in Budapest, with a few overdubs from the guests which he encountered during his journeys in Brazil, Ghana and Europe. Each track carries a personal input from the culture of every musician and it blends in beautifully with Àbáse’s ideas of mixing jazz and hip-hop in it. There is a strong West-African and Brazilian influence that is especially to be felt in the percussion and a lot of experimentation with jazz and hip hop.

Owing their foundations to traditional afrobeat (and named after a Fela Kuti song), the Brooklyn-based, female-fronted band, Underground System, has built an international reputation around a seamlessly executed stage show, astonishing wherever they go, and compelling crowds to move with unbridled verve. 

In September 2018 the band released their debut LP What Are You on Soul Clap Records, the much-loved New York City imprint known for their coupling of party-ready DJ culture and shapeshifting live acts.

Following up on “What Are You,” Underground System returns to Soul Clap Records with a remix package of their standout single “Just A Place” with remixes from Gerd Janson, Greg Wilson, Sol Power All-Stars, Soul Clap, and Peter Matson.


Peter gives the original new life for the club with an oddball disco approach that’ll surely be a go-to tool for DJs operating within the genre. Crisp congas and a steady bass line are two constants only uprooted by the occasional instrumental flare or percussive fill. What we’ve got here is a reliable chugger that’s never too dull and never to hype.
