"I was truly honored in being tasked with the sunset slot on Saturday evening for Chill Island's maiden voyage at Esoteric. 

The view, vibe and beautiful souls in attendance made for one of the most magical settings I've ever had the priveledge of performing a chill set for. Something I hope my soundtrack did justice to.

Co-manning the nationally respected brand Substance Sounds, and birthing the hugely successful club-night Prognosis, J has also had the honor of supporting artists such as Nick Warren, Hybrid, Henry Saiz, Hernan Cattaneo, John Digweed, Guy J, Apparat, Jody Wisternoff, Pig & Dan, Rennie Pilgrim, Krafty Kuts, Boris Brejcha, Stanton Warriors and Lee Coombs, while being a regular guest at parties such as Darkbeat, Instinct, Doesn’t Matter, Mahala and playing at festivals such as Rainbow Serpent, Esoteric & Summadayze, to name but a select few.

We're thrilled to welcome back tune aficionado and beatsmith J-Slyde with another brilliant mix... this time it's a live recording from his set on Chill Island @ Esoteric 2023...

Here's what he had to say about the set...

"I find chill sets the most un-chill set to plan for. I always begin with lofty aspirations, amassing a huge bucket of music that travels through BPM, genre and style, with the idea that it will all somehow come together on game day.

As I began work on piecing together this set, I was reminded that they never just "come together".

But that's a big part of why they end up being so special.

Then being offered a platform as beautiful as Esoteric's Chill Island to play such a set, further helping to make things that much sweeter.

It also played part of a 4-hour breathe. showcase, with Simon on beforehand. Big thanks to him for trusting me with such an honour!

The mix is loosely split into 3 chapters which cover lo-fi house, trip-hop, hip-hop, electronica, progressive breaks, lots of weird beats & breaks, some garage, a cheeky slathering of dnb and an amen break for good measure. All as cohesively as I could mix them together.

"Things don't always go to plan. This set was originally planned to be performed at Interstellar Groove Festival 2024, but sadly, life got in the way and I had to cancel on the gig at the last minute. Having spent so much time amassing the music, piecing the set together and rehearsing it, I felt the pull to finalise things and close out the chapter. So after some time to breathe, I sat down and recorded it in one live take, as was planned for the stage at IGF.

🌈 Here's my set from Rainbow Serpent Festival 2017 played on the Chill Stage, Sunday afternoon from 2:30pm - 4pm.

From the bottom of my heart I'd like to throw out a huge THANK YOU to everyone that made it down to sit, sway, bop and listen. It warmed my soul seeing so many smiling faces kicking back and enjoying the music. Words honestly escaped me seeing the turnout and the amazing vibes everyone was projecting. It was an unforgettable experience that I'll cherish for the rest of my life. <3

"Putting together this set was an immensely cathartic experience and helped me deal with some grief I'd been going through at the time. In some ways I feel this reflects the journey it took. 

A few key pieces of music were specifically chosen to convey the sense of sadness one might experience when knowing they have to say goodbye to a loved one. 

Likewise, there are a few that I hope convey the sense of happiness one might experience after realising that they were simply lucky enough to have that loved one in their life to begin with.

With that said I'd like to dedicate this to my Godmother, Antoinette <3 ".

I approached this set with the hope of finding a happy medium between the two. Beats that might pique the interest of those heading home, hopefully offering some respite, but also music that would re-energize those waking, helping them get ready for the day ahead.

This mix was for a podcast series I was planning to start called 'Something Different'. The idea was that it would kickstart the series, but life got in the way and it was put on the backburner. I figure, rather than it collecting dust on my hard drive, it would be put to better use inside of peoples earholes.

It floats around a downtempo vibe covering ambient, jazz, straight up orchestral pieces, electronica, beats and much more. I challenged myself to include music I wouldn't normally play in a traditional chill mix, so there are some abstract pieces throughout. I hope it assists in making it an interesting listening experience!
