To be free, means to be a freak. Whether as a DJ, label manager, T-Shirt creator or all-round talent – since two decades, Ellen Allien is one of Berlin’s exceptional phenomena that have created her own universe with the combination of old school-based underground love and contemporary experimental spirit. After the lovely musical affair with Thomas Muller for the track „Free Nation“, for her new solo release we hear the anniversary bells ringing. The three tracks – which are co-produced by Martin Eyerer and Skinnerbox – already mark the 300th catalog number of BPitch Control.
The „Freak EP“ is not only the result of the last months in Berlin; it also flags up the change to Ibiza, where Ellen uses the warm season to spray her positive vibe during her residency in DC 10. „Butterfly“ acts like the kick-off and not only host graceful 808 pinpricks, with the dreamy melody in the background a nostalgic aura raises that reveals Ellen’s warmer side. Especially the bass rumble emphasizes the physicality of her music in an impressive manner – in short: pure love. „Come To
Me“ is desire and passion within seven and a half minutes. In addition to the deep house frame groovy beats pushes in the foreground that sets free a hypnotic mantra. Spineless dancefloor magic that rewinds time with the haunting rave signal, floating Roland synths and the SH101 raveline. With the title track „Freak The Night Away“, Ellen once more succeeded in creating a hymn that embodies both the slogan of every great night as well as the strong atmosphere of her energetic DJ sets. Again, we hear Ellen’s charming voice – crazy, playful, creative. Following the motto: just go! With rattling claps and a warm bass, dancing won’t become a compulsion; the track clearly goes under the skin with its 303 acid hints as well as Roland piano sounds and opens the gate to another dimension. Artist collaborations often end after just one track or an EP. However, for Argy & Mama there never seemed to be any question over whether they would continue. Indeed, their first joint release marked the start of a longer journey.
Listening to their Recluse EP, which came out in the summer, you already had the inescapable feeling that this remarkable duo had a lot more to say.
Consequently, the pair have extended their amiable tête-à-tête to the album-length release “Domino- nation”. This follows two recent remixes of Hot Since 82 and Kele (of Bloc Party fame).
Thanks to his production skills and non-stop worldwide DJ tour spinning futuristic techno, Argy, born on the island of Rhodes, has become a firm fixture on the international club circuit.
His records have found homes on labels such as Cadenza, Cocoon, Ibadan, Permanent Vacation and Poker Flat. His hit “Love Dose” remains fresh in the memory.
Mama, who lived in London for an extended period, has achieved great success as a singer and live performer. She has already collaborated with musicians such as Munk, Catz n Dogz and Tiefschwarz, as well as opening for bands like Die Antwoord, Kele and Peaches. Her voice is best known for the hit single „Corporate Butcher“ with Tiefschwarz and remixed by Solomun.
As Argy & Mama the two artists let their love for music flow at full force. Their first album brings together eleven pieces that are soaked in expression and inspiration.
House appears in various guises, alongside 2-step and garage influences, and we can clearly hear a penchant for the golden nineties.
Mama’s passionate, multifaceted singing style allows the full character of Argy’s arrangements to flourish.
This gives rise to tracks with a vivacious catchiness, where intelligently composed rhythms and grooves meet rich emotions.

Staring At The Wall

Grammy award winning Swedish singer/songwriter Karin Park’s latest release finds her in a collaboration with Pandora Drive (a duo comprised of filmmaker and photographer Thomas Knights and DJ and producer Nick Sheldon Hurricane). The combination has created a woozy, downtempo electro-pop and here, we treat you to the incredible Maya Jane Coles remix as she puts her unmistakeable, equally woozy, low slung house tinge on an already beautiful track.
