1.Birthday pantomime week 25

we were like a ticking bomb
but we never knew it at the time
beneath the veil the thin veneer
of smiles and cheap red wine
we skirted round the cutting truth 
we flirted o so blind
dressed to impress from the dress up chest
for a birthday pantomime

love is a circus love is a show
all come to wonder
some never know
walk on a tightrope
fly through the air
promise you ll catch me
til youre not there 

we were like a spinning top
so destined for the deepest    fall
we’d dance for days then part our ways
and then return for more
the zing the zip the smile the pinch
our hearts a broken arrow
wrapped up in lies and no surprise
it dragged us to tomorrow

we were like a party trick
that never turned out right
but still we d try it night and day
and break into an ugly fight
the size of lies the bright disguise
that smothered every little flame
 and even when some hope would rise
we snuffed it out the quicker

Week 35 Prompt: Batter Up!

Note about the song: I'm actually not old enough to have actually seen some of the baseball players mentioned in this song, but honest to goodness, my little toddler heart swooned for Paul Molitor, who left the Milwaukee Brewers to play for the Toronto Blue Jays.

well i remember when i was just a kid
we'd pile into that pick-up truck and we'd get on in
and we'd head down to County Stadium
down in ol' Milwaukee
cheering on the Brewers with soda and coffee

always had a bag of snacks
forget those cheap crackerjacks
peanuts and starburst and licorice galore
screaming out the players' names
even though we'd missed the '82 team 
just the same still got to see some of the big time stars

like Robin Yount, Rollie Fingers, 
and my favourite one of all, 
Paulie Molitor before he went on to 
Toronto and all
i'd scream and i'd hoot and 
i'd holler with the best
scream, "Batter Up! Uh, who's next?"

and all those times when we 
couldn't get down to the game
down at the ballpark, it didn't matter, 
we could listen just the same
to Mr. Baseball himself, Bob Uecker, 
calling out every play
"Batter Up!" i'd listen to him say

oh those sweet memories
they stay with me
listening to the baseball game with my family
hearing the sound of the ball crack against the bat
oh i'll remember nights like that

see the monster crawling over
hill and dale and valley

feel the air is thickening now
as i hear its breathing growing
stronger somehow tonight

mama always said

but i don't know that she ever had
these monsters

i had hoped it was a dream
but then i see those eyes and how they gleam
gazing back at me

like a scary moment frozen
in this time i'm frozen in my stead

From the new album - 'Sound Postcards from the Centre of the Periphery' by Manja Ristić and Mark Vernon.

We made this 13-track journey around the sounds and sonic histories of the island of Korčula. In addition to our own field recordings, we were given access to the audio archives of the local radio station, including recordings of folk customs, traditional songs, dances and music...

This album unites two specific sensibilities that for many years have been embedded in the domain of sound and radio arts. Although they arose from very different environments, their work explores similar issues around preserving personal sonic histories. By stirring up nostalgia and collective memory, both artists often refer to the importance of individual experiences in the poetic "body" of micro-communities. 

The artistic practice of both creators has been deeply immersed in the sonic strata of space and the imaginary narratives that emerge from it. A dedication to the culture of memory, the sounding of lost voices and an unorthodox approach to re-composing the soundscape, conveniently unites these two experimenters in a collaboration that arises from research into one particularly inspiring locality – the island of Korčula. 

In addition to their own field recordings the artists were given access to the audio archives of the local radio station, including sounds of local folk customs, traditional songs, festivities and music. The strong anthropological emphasis in this collection of works is intended to encourage a deeper consideration of the coexistence of people and the environment in a historically dense climate. The appropriation of the hidden narratives of a small town on the fringes of the European Union opens up new fields of reflection on identity that looks back at the "center of the periphery", pointing to the importance of "small" spaces in the creation of European heritage. 

‘Sound postcards from the center of the periphery’ will be stored permanently in the audio archives of Radio Korčula. Who knows, maybe someone will dig them out in 50 years and say: "...there you go! This will make your head ring!"
