A great philosopher (Samuel Johnson, not Ebeneezer Goode) once wrote… “our brightest blazes of gladness are commonly kindled by unexpected sparks”. While it would be a stretch to suggest the Drumcode artist roster are closet philosophy fans, once one begins to unravel the tale that led to Jel Ford remixing the 2012 Alan Fitzpatrick hit ‘For An Endless Night’ and it is impossible to escape the unexpected enterprise and spirit of surprise that are at the heart of this exciting collaboration. 

As fans of Adam Beyer’s label will testify, the two Drumcode names have more in common than just a label stable, they also share common ground with the peak-time melodic sound that has delivered many of the labels most memorable output. Ford being a much more recent addition than Fitzpatrick, whose history with the seminal Swedish imprint stretches back to 2009, however Ford’s history within techno goes back even further having released multiple EP’s through the early noughties on vintage UK techno labels including Dave Angel’s Rotation Records, Billy Nasty’s Tortured Records, Primate Recordings and Ford’s own Jericho imprint. 

It is within this shared passion for uplifting synths and big room melodies that the ‘unexpected spark’ of creativity that led to Ford remixing Fitzpatrick can be found. An long-time admirer of Fitzpatrick’s work, Ford had developed an idea for his alternative version and secretly worked on the remix long before any discussion of the project had taken place. Once given the draft version, Fitzpatrick immediately endorsed the remix, excited to have an updated version to breath new life into what had become a familiar staple of his sets for the past two years. Parts were swapped and the end result being the barnstorming end-of-night monster presented here. A track that will be familiar with many having been the subject of much social-media furor since it first surfaced back in Autumn 2014.

With releases on Crosstown Rebels, Hot Creations and BPitch Control, it's safe to say Venezuelan-originating, Barcelona-based duo Fur Coat are backed by some real key players.

Last year's 'There's No Time' EP on Jamie Jones and Lee Foss' HC was a proper smash, with the title track a certainty to mess with your mind. That followed the 'U Turn' EP on Damian Lazarus' Crosstown, a tasty four-tracker of sizzling grooves.

Soon they make their debut for Balance, mixing the 'Balance presents Fur Coat' compilation featuring cuts by DJ Koze, Francesca Lombardo, Roman Flügel and a couple from themselves.

A relentless sonic adventurer in both studio and club trenches, Patrice knows his peak time by heart, having developed quite the understanding of the fluctuations of the crowd before him. You can hear that straightaway with a-side cut LOWRIDER, a clattering minimalist groover with maximum impact, vetting helplessly stuck floors with a surge of adrenalin-fuelled percussion and the occasional synth roar. The b-side's THE VANISHING presents itself as an equally hypnotic affair, albeit with a different angle - this time, we find a true melodic meltdown monster whose epic vocal break will leave no roof or hand unraised. With records like these, we've got no worries about the sheer, animalistic power of techno.

Following on from the well received Chord Cluster 12" from late 2017, the irresistible pairing of Steve Bug (@stevebug) and Langenberg (@langenberg) return with 'Paradise Sold' - a full ten track album of exquisitely crafted house music on Bug’s own Poker Flat Recordings. 

Neither Steve Bug nor Langenberg needs much introduction due to the sizeable contributions both have made in building the European house and techno scene as we know it. Bug’s relentless commitment to quality - both in his own work and in the many producers he has championed - has made him one of electronic music's most revered artists and curators.

Langenberg aka Max Heesen is the deep guru of the German Deep House Scene. One half of the duo Ribn, he has released on labels like Drumpoet, STH- LM Audio, Strax Leaves, Ovum and most notably on Dessous who put out his debut solo LP released in late 2016. Put these two dons in a studio together, and the results are truly special.

The album is a masterclass in house music production and came to life as a true collaborative work. "It feels great to work with Max and I don't know why we didn't get to work together earlier" says Steve Bug. "It feels very natural to be in the studio together and our two worlds match easily. I think I speak for the both of us, when I say, by combining forces we came up with tunes, that we wouldn't have created on our own."

"I really enjoyed the process of making this album", adds Langenberg. "We weren't just sending tracks back and forth over the internet. It was the two of us working together in the studio. It was interesting to experience how the tracks came to life. In the end all the tracks have both of our handwritings, but the final result has become bigger than just the sum of our individual input."

Paradise Sold is a hardware-heavy production, with the Moog Sub 37, Dave Smith Sequential Prophet 6, Studio Electronics Omega 8, Roland Juno 60, Juno 106, and TB 303 all used before the entire albums was mixed down with engineering legend turned producer Hannes Bieger at his studio to make use of his analog mixing gear.

Steve Bug & Langenberg - Late Harvest

Samuel "Sam" Paganini is not a real newcomer anymore. After all, he produces great tracks for more than ten years now and also became an acknowledged DJ in Italy during this time. However, his career received an enormous boost since 2011 with his releases on Plus 8 and Drumcode, and now reaches a new height with his Cocoon Recordings debut. Compared to other releases, Paganini's 'Body To Body' EP draws a quite exceptional line. 
The title track "Body To Body" is downright breathing the late air of Electronic Body Music and lives on elements which would have also fit into "The House Of God" by DHS or into some of the more minimal works of Front 242. Gloomy, but still with hit potential – this is a rare mixture nowadays. Great!
With "Fire In My Arms", Paganini is then slightly moving to more contemporary areas, more loop-based and more new school, but still a little gloomy – a very unique blend and maybe representing the typical "Paganini style" best! 
"Polyester", the most House-like track, is the true hit of this EP! Nice old-school snare rolls, driving 909 ride cymbals and sirens result in a kicking Acid feeling that clearly distinguishes from the EBM mood of the first track. Well done!

The digital version contains two bonus tracks: "Hot" opens the doors to New School House as we know it most likely from labels like Cécille: rolling beats, hypnotic vocal scraps, all arranged in a very DJ-friendly way. The very powerful Chicago bass line of the second bonus track ("Paral-Lel") is fueling the dancefloor and siren and synth attacks, combined with compelling beats, result in peaktime music at its best!
