Introduction to the Baroque Era/Period Music

The Baroque era 1590 - 1750, spanning from the late 16th century to the early 18th century, was a time of artistic grandeur and musical innovation. This period in music history is characterized by its ornate and intricate compositions, elaborate melodies, and the use of various instruments to create a rich and dynamic musical tapestry.

Baroque music is known for its use of dramatic contrasts, ornamentation, and emotional intensity. Composers of the Baroque era aimed to create music that evoked powerful emotions and stimulated the senses. This led to the development of new musical forms and styles, such as the opera, oratorio, and concerto.

The Baroque era brought about significant changes in music composition. Composers began to explore complex harmonies, intricate melodies, and the use of contrasting textures to create depth and expressiveness in their compositions. This era also saw the emergence of virtuosic instrumental music and the establishment of the basso continuo as a standard practice in music composition.

Bread was formed in 1969, when leading producer/arranger and session man David Gates produced Pleasure Faire, a band that included guitarist Robb Royer and songwriter James Griffin.

As Bread, the three combined to create a polished, melodic soft-rock style, which by their second album, On The Waters, unleashed the chart topping single “Make It With You.” Further albums yielded major hits in “Baby I’m A Want You” “Everything I Own,” and “Guitar Man,” by which time another noted session man, Larry Knechtel, had replaced Royer.

Bread’s smooth pop approach also earned them a stream of international hits and they toured successfully. Bread’s sound was not without an edge, but those immaculate pop hits overshadowed the group‘s compelling albums.

Bread was a highly significant group for Elektra as they eased the label’s transition into the 70’s by which time music was changing and Elektra, now part of the Warner Communications Group, reflected the more accessible, AM fueled direction.
