Every now and then something comes along that really hits a nerve, this is in fact one of those nerve-hitters, another beautiful case of 'nailing the brief’. This is a romantic story of a user-submitted piece of art from someone who just gets ‘it’ (define ‘it’ on your own time). I receive a lot of submissions, and I do take time to listen to them all, and it generally pays off because there’s a surprising amount of people that are passionate about the series (it has reached further than I could ever have hoped).

This submission comes from a Naarm local; DJ Upstairs, aka James. I don’t know much about James but god damn I know one thing and that is his impeccable taste in music. James also keeps busy with contributing to an online magazine and radio station called ‘Frockup’ (hot tip/link below) full of fantastically curated sounds and well constructed word pieces.

Shall we talk about the mix? We shall. 184 minutes of pure bliss, transcending every form of audible pleasure, pulling on all threads of the galaxy, knitted together to form your new favourite jumper to keep you warm throughout winter. From start to finish this incredibly eclectic journey keeps you completely enthralled and entertained, three hours has never felt so …….. short. There’s way too many amazing tracks to pin the highlights (except some lost Van Morrison track that instantly transported me back to my childhood / Bless up). You can almost smell the effort that went into this, a labour of love that has really paid off. I’ve listened to it at least once a week, I just came back from a big camping trip in NT and it was the family favourite by a long shot. A perfect soundtrack to a long drive to no particular destination.

Extracted from the archives, we have Lena's Bank Holiday set from last August for you. 
It was sadly Lena's only set at The Gun, but it was a wild night, sweaty and heaving in the extreme & certainly one of favourites. The crowd had been dancing from about 7pm (Casper Clark and I's warm up is also available here) so when Lena got on for the remaining 4.5 hours, the room went nuts. Its a brilliantly varied and balanced set that encapsulates so much of what we loved at The Gun, banging enough for a room full of seething heads. dancing into the early hours and considered and classy do that it suits playback at any time of the day.
The recorder died just before the end of the set, so it appears those very last tracks were just for us there on that night, the rest is ready now. (Thanks for this Lena x)

In the words of Scott Zacharias, who closed the Outer Space Room at No Way Back, May 25, 2025, Day 2 of Return to the Source at Tangent, Detroit:

“NWB, being more than just the sum of its parts, always reflects my current life state(or lack of) and this year was no different. My friend Zach reminded me of this ultra-special cut by Arthur Russell: “In the Light of the Miracle.” It’s one of those holy grails and this mix (by Danny Krivit & Tony Smith) only existed as unreleased Talking’ Loud promo until a Soul Jazz comp finally issued it properly in 2005. I used to run it occasionally some 20 years ago, but hearing it again left me shook and set the stage for my entire set. And the rest of my life. My partner Ellen and I learned we were pregnant that same weekend.

Completely overwhelmed, I felt like I just wanted to share music for folks like I do in my own living room. Not really as a mix, but an intimate family affair. In the wee hours of the morning when I finally decided to share Russell’s opus, Ellen joined me on stage. We embraced and cried as we saw all our friends dancing in a now sunlit room.

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. I've never really been comfortable with Artist or DJ titles or whatever. Perhaps "music obsessed" suits me better. Probably a more fitting description.

Q. How long have you been a part of the NYC music scene?
A. I landed in New York in 2007. I thought that was it. After Detroit, next chapter. In retrospect, I was just on a DJ hiatus. I guess I've been a part of Brooklyn's DJ scene for a little over a decade.

Q. Tell us about this mix.
A. I've been toying with the idea of doing a different kind of mix for a while. Juanita's was the perfect opportunity to showcase a different side. So, thank you. Most people who know me think Acid. House. Techno. Electro. Bangers Only! This mix is not that. I've always been heavily influenced by my 90's upbringing. A musically rich and significant era. The elements of atmosphere, mood, and spirit come into play for this mix. It's a bit nostalgic and sentimental. A one take, vinyl only situation recorded at home just yesterday. A stream of consciousness summer head nod for a rainy day, or a sunny one. Meant to uplift and inspire. It is necessary to keep our optimism and focus up with the music that moves us, and to share that. It is an extension of love and hope in our extreme times. Press play. Turn up. Enjoy.
