This Fanfare on “Christ is Arisen”  begins with a theme that our Associate Pastor said reminded him of the roar of Aslan, the great and powerful lion from the C. S. Lewis book The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe who as a character has many similarities to Christ. That theme serves as a ritornello while the choir sings the ancient hymn “Christ is Arisen” (CHRIST IST ERSTANDEN). Surrexit Christus! Surrexit Hodie!

Here is a vibrant Chorale Prelude with a vigorous ritornello on the hymn "I Will Sing My Maker's Praises" (SOLL'T ICH MEINEM GOTT) by Johann Schop (c. 1590-1644). Inspired by the hymn improvisations of Paul Manz (1919-2009), it is particularly effective to solo out the melody on a strong solo trumpet, but the melody may also be played with full organ. This setting may be used to introduce the hymn, as a Prelude or Postlude for a worship service, or as as a stand-alone, hymn-based work on an organ concert. Here is an inventive and stirring setting of the Christmas carol "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" (VENI EMMANUEL) for SATB choir with optional strings. Composed in a Neo-Renaissance style, it sets all seven verses modulating into four keys while passing the melody from voice to voice before concluding with sudden and surprising key changes that lead to a powerful cadence on the altered note of the Picardy third. It may be performed a capella, with keyboard, or with instruments. This intense setting of the hymn "From Depths of Woe" (AUS TIEFER NOT) by Martin Luther (1483-1546) was originally composed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) for organ (BWV 686). It is a unique six-part setting in which four voices are played by the hands and two by the feet. Bach places the melody of the hymn in the top pedal part. Scored for two trumpets, French horn, two trombones, Euphonium, and Tuba, this arrangement for Brass Choir or Brass Ensemble places the chorale melody (cantus firmus) in the Trombone 2 part. This part can be doubled by another French horn so that the hymn tune stands out from the thick polyphony. The original setting has been transposed down a major third. Here is a serene. joyful, and triumphant setting of the Christmas carol "O Come, All Ye Faithful" (ADESTE FIDELIS) for SATB choir with optional strings. The choral edition is available in either English or Latin. The work may also be played by stings alone (String Quartet, String Ensemble, or String Orchestra). The first verse is taken from an arrangement by 19th century composer Samuel Webbe (1740-1816). The other stanzas are original. The choral version begins with a soloist inviting the faithful to join a great, joyful, and triumphal procession to Bethlehem. The full choir joins by repeating the last part of first stanza, a lost tradition that is evident in early hymnals and arrangements of this carol. In successive stanzas, each voice part takes a turn leading the joyous procession by singing the melody. Pivot modulations, interesting harmonies, soaring descants, and unique vocal textures characterize this arrangement. It will move both performers and audiences alike.
