This version of Spirits is performed in May 2015 at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival by the Courtney Bryan ensemble including Troi Bechet (voice), Brian Quezerque (bass), and Miles Labat (drum set). It is part of a larger set. 

Spirits is an excerpt from Prophetika: an Oratorio - premiered at La MaMa Experimental Theatre March 2015 - Charlotte Brathwaite (director)/Courtney Bryan (composer)/Abigail Deville (artist) with Jadele McPherson (voice/acting), Brandee Younger (harp), Justin Hicks (voice/electronics), and Courtney Bryan (piano).

Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, and currently residing in Beverly, Massachusetts, violinist, vocalist and songwriter Aisha Burns began playing violin when she was 10 years old, and has been touring and recording since 2006.  Soon after moving to Austin in 2005, she gained her start with folk-rock outfit Alex Dupree and the Trapdoor Band, and joined the instrumental ensemble Balmorhea on violin in 2007.  After years of secret singing, she released her solo debut Life in the Midwater in 2013.  Called "twisting, ethereal...arresting" by Dazed Magazine, and praised for its "delicate intimacy" by NPR, Life in the Midwater explored mortality and relationships with candor and wisdom.  Her new album Argonauta, is a collection of songs about her struggle with the grief of losing her mother, while also navigating a new relationship, and ultimately trying to figure out what the new normal is for her life.

"Let us go, then, you and I," beckons the opening line of T. S. Eliot's "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock." (1915). The journey that invitation spurs, guided by the titular J. Alfred Prufrock, winds through the sitting parlors and smog-filled streets of Edwardian London, and through the innermost thoughts and fears of Prufrock himself.

The poem is a study in contradictions. It is a heroic epic written about a deeply unheroic man-- vain, self-loathing, and cautious to a fault-- lamenting the impossibility of the epic in modern life. Banal and even grotesque turns of phrase appear next to heartachingly beautiful ones, woven together with allusions to Shakespeare and Dante. Above all, Prufrock obsesses over his senescence and the eventual approach of death-- yet the poet (then signing his name T. Stearns Eliot) wrote the bulk of the poem at the age of 22. Prufrock is a spectre of what Eliot himself fears he may become-- a miserable, aging man whose life is measured and revised so carefully that he talks himself out of art, love, and happiness-- dying as alone and forgotten as he was in life.

I hope that I have done this masterpiece justice.
