This narrative is an assignment for my Digital Storytelling class, inspired by the tales heard on This American Life. From biology student at the University of Pennsylvania, to selling beer to addicts and construction men at Troy’s, a chaotic “greasy spoon” deli, to owning a used bookstore, my father, Larry Maltz, didn’t find his calling right away. It took some time and he had some adventures. In this narrative, he shares his experience working at Troy’s. His time there exposed him to people from all walks of life and the harsh reality that some people face every day. Through its endless chaos and crazy cast of regular customers, this job is what gave my father the values he utilized in his future career as a bookseller. Enjoy!
