Andrew Ashong - Love The Way

In connecting musical roots, Zoe Viccaji brings her version of a melody that has traveled across the globe in many forms to now be presented as ‘Ishq Kinara’. She had heard the song in its Turkish equivalent – ‘Üsküdar'a Gider İken’ - and upon delving into the origin of the song, was inspired by not only the melody but the universality of its tune in the way that it has been reinvented in many different cultures across the globe. Given the driving inspiration behind Zoe’s connection with the melody was in her Turkish experience of the song, the composition was bridged with the vocals of Sumru Ağıryürüyen bringing the traditional Turkish song to the fold lending a link to its root. Sumru states that while ‘Üsküdar’a Gider İken’ stems from the old, Anatolian neighborhood of Üsküdar in Istanbul, the Turkish version’s roots connect even further to several other countries - Bosnia, Scotland and beyond. This fact was further confirmed by members of L’Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio in Rome, Italy, who had heard versions of the same melody. The Turkish version of the song primarily dealt with the theme of the despair caused by Loss in the name of Love, however Zoe, in connecting with the song personally, lyrically made her version about the idea of independence and self-realization in the name of Loss. ‘Ishq Kinara’ talks of the last moment of vulnerability as a relationship is severed, and looks on to being complete within one’s Self after the Loss. With an upbeat mixed canvas of instrumentation from Italy, Turkey, Morocco and Pakistan, the song becomes Pakistan’s version of the mysterious melody.

Israeli producer Omer Grinker has been following in the footsteps of many of his compatriots of late, with his intricate take on house music earning his much deserved plaudits. A most reputable purveyor of all things deep, Grinker's discography may be fairly sparse, but it's littered with quality-strewn moments nonetheless. With the exceptional Relations EP - a collaborative affair with Noam Levy - still warming our ears, we thought it was about time up we welcomed the fast rising Omer to deliver a mix for our Mix Of The Day Series.

Long championed by us here at DT as a rich source of soulful house vibes, thanks in the main to his work on Spanish/Lithuanian imprint, Parallel Records, his 50 odd minute selection of choice cuts for us to wrap our listening gear around was just the tonic we needed to kickstart our week. Art Departments Natural Selection album is the gift that keeps on giving, with recent stunning remixes by DJ Tennis and Chaim of Walls now followed by an excellent mix package of Kisses for Roses. The remix duties for this latest offering come courtesy of US house stars The Martinez Brothers and Bostonian funk masters Soul Clap. First to step forward on this new Kisses for Roses remix package are Objektivity aligned pair The Martinez Brothers, who also run their own Tuskegee Music label with Seth Troxler. Energetic and hugely talented in the booth and the studio, there are few hotter acts in the world right now. Their take on the Art Department original is a robust, kicking house track with tons of kinetic energy, barreling drums and spritely synths that squelch about at a high tempo. Its a big hitting, high impact version with a real sense of emotion coming from the pained vocals and is sure to soar this summer. Little needs to be said of funk champions Soul Clap, who as well as running their own label, being part of Crew Love, releasing on Wolf & Lamb and collaborating with George Clinton are also revered DJs who have spun at every party worth its salt. Here they turn out two versions, the first is a loose limbed, soul infused and mid tempo house jam with muffled voices adding plenty of atmosphere to the track. Funky drums, crisp percussion and squelchy synths all make for a charmingly steamy yet sensitive rework and the spoken word vocals really finish it off in style. Their second version is a dub that is even deeper, more sensuous and seductive with its humid pads and gloopy, snaking synths.
