Kuba Kapsa is a Polish pianist and composer being the leader of the avant-jazz combo Contemporary Noise Sextet (2006-2014). Beyond that he is a renowned composer for film and theater plays. His latest venture is the first of a sophisticated series of projects of modern classical music bearing the common title "Vantdraught".

The first part of the "Vantdraught" series is called "Vantdraught 10" written for ten classical instruments - 4 violins, 2 violas, cello, vibraphone, marimba and piano. The music is largely based on a repetition of individual melodic motifs, which are also quite multithreaded within a given composition. Vibraphone, piano and marimba are written in a “push-pull” combination, being the rhythmical base for every piece, while strings are instantly “questioning and answering” each other whether being supportive to the rhythm or used for the presentation of themes. The common feature of every composition is symmetry, which has been applied to almost every aspect - rhythm, harmony, motifs and themes. The first four pieces of "Vantdraught 10", which are inspired by the works of classical minimalists, early 20th century composers and 20th century Polish composers such as Steve Reich, Igor Stravinsky, Edgar Varesè, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki or Wojciech Kilar, have been recorded in December 2014 with musicians from renowned Polish ensembles such as Neoquartet and Kwartludium at the concert studios of Radio Gdansk. "Vantdraught 10 Vol.1" will be released on Denovali Records in April 2015. For Vol. 2, which is following up, Kuba Kapsa will present a rather asymmetrical approach to voice leading and rhythm. 
"Vantdraught 10·Vol.1" features an astonishing artwork based on "Brotmorgendämmerung" (breaddawn) by the seminal artist duo Kahn & Selesnick.

A Cerulean State - Olēka

Farbwechsel's co-founder S Olbricht aka Martin Mikolai from Budapest has been quite active in the lo-fi techno scene over the past few years. Having already dropped numerous EPs and LPs on established labels including Opal Tapes and Vertikal Records, the Hungarian producer makes a return on London-based imprint Lobster Theremin with an album called "For Perfect Beings". The LP's opener "Asterid" featured here is no less than a fantastic piece of ambient and grainy techno, driven by an obsessive woodblock and slowly morphing along some haunting cinematic synths. One for the dreamers and the techno geeks out there. "For Perfect Beings" reaches the shops on April 8, props to Lobster Theremin for another beautiful release.

Fragments is a collection of reworked & remastered tracks & live recordings which were composed in 2015.
Each piece was originally created as part of a soundtrack for "Some Thoughts On Mercy” an essay written and read by Ross Gay, part of “Bringing Down the New Jim Crow” a radio documentary series by Chris Moore-Backman.
I have spent time reworking & remixing each section composed for the soundtrack as well as several alternative tracks that were created at the same time. The end result is a 10 track release which captures the atmosphere & inspiration in a new form.

Spring of 2021 is off to a good start! Well, at least when it comes to beautiful music that I love to feature on Headphone Commute! This week has already been full of introductions, announcements, and exciting premieres! And today is no exception! In fact, it’s the highlight of my week, as I’ve been awaiting to share this release with you for almost a month now. “Anxiety Mist” is an opening piece from Matt Emery‘s upcoming six-track EP on Injazero Records, titled Spotlight Series : Cello, and it holds no prisoners! As you may have already glimpsed from the title, Emerie intends to release a series of recordings, focusing on an individual instrument for each one – with the opener prominently featuring the cello. In addition to showcasing the virtuosity, tonal range, and timbre-rich textures of each one, there is also a story with each release. Perhaps the album cover [and my tongue-in-cheek pun of mentioning ‘prisoners’ above] gives away the theme of this first entry, as the dark, intense, and cinematic climax of this piece retells a story of a samurai preparing for a battle. Anxiety is at the core of rising tones, increasing tension in dynamics as if performed in one big breath until exhale brings on comfort.

Opener ‘Anxiety Mist’ is made up of fifteen individually-performed lines, its core revolving around a rising glissando figure, eventually accompanied with lush, building harmonies and punctuated by stabs and erratic higher melodies that paint the picture of warriors waiting in line amid the mist, a thunderous charge into battle forebodingly imminent.
