When a series of disasters of biblical proportions descended on Nick Wilde’s London studio, raining down electrical fire and epic deluges, there seemed to be only one solution: add the daily grind to a casualty list that included every single bit of his precious equipment and strike out for the wilderness.

A few months later, he found himself deep in the ancient heart of the medina of Marrakech and refreshingly immersed himself in the rich culture of a country where the traditional and the timeless rub shoulders with the glitz and glare of modern life.

Inspired by his wanderings across the country and by the sound of its music, it began to dawn on him that perhaps it was destiny (as well as questionable plumbing and faulty electrics) that had led him into this enchanted labyrinth and he set his mind to building a new studio in an 800-year-old house. 

As his new neighbours muttered to each other disbelievingly about the lunatic who kept carting endless quantities of foam, paint, steel and a giant soundproof door, by donkey, into the house, Nick slowly but surely shaped a new studio into his own sonic Caravanserai.

Once it was built, Nick set out on a magical musical pilgrimage across the wilds of Morocco. Despite dead-ends, meaningless leads, un-kept meetings, unusual encounters and hours of travel on dusty desert roads, Nick gathered a group of incredible musicians around him. From the Mediterranean beaches of the North, down the primordial spine of the Atlas mountains and out into the arid maelstrom of the tribal Sahara, he began working with, listening to and recording artists, old and new. His dream slowly morphed into a very real collective, fused across places, harmonies, peoples, rhythms, cultures and ages.

And so Caravane was born – a marriage between the sounds of a country in flux and Nick’s own musical identity that had been forged in the urban flame of London town. 

Distilling an intoxicating blend of traditional and modern, East and West, Africa and Arabia, dubstep and hip hop, electronics and acoustics, Nick has woven together an alchemical musical mixture that glides through fusions and finds its own unique voice.

Caravane features the raw, uncut talent of some of Morocco’s best musicians, as well as some of its most famous performers - including the extraordinary Oum and the vocals, ribab and violin of Foulane, who also performs with Ribab Fusion and Mazagan. Filtered through the prism of Nick’s own musical references and contemporary production, Caravane has managed to synthesise a totally new and inspirational folk music for our time; a fresh cultural understanding in a world where it is so desperately needed…

After building up unexpected dance-energy by combining common forces of music, we are ready to push on our inner circle and are setting up some new weapons.
