'Natural World' is the first of four new works commissioned by Juliet that respond to the work of Rachel Carson. The Carson Commissions have been generously supported by Arts Council England's National Lottery Project Grants, PRS Foundation's The Open Fund for Music Creators and the RVW Trust. 'Natural World' was co-commissioned by Musica Sacra and Oxford Lieder.

Cassandra Miller 'Tracery : Lazy, Rocking' (2017) is part of a new modular work, 'Tracery', for voice and fixed audio. This module features no live performance, but uses the process common to all parts of the piece, that of Juliet trying to sing along to a piece of source material whilst performing a body scan meditation. In this module the source material is the second movement of Ben Johnston's String Quartet no. 8.

PROGRAMME NOTE
The mouth is the threshold between two worlds, the interior and exterior. There is the inner voice which each of us carries within - an internal monologue, our voice-over, an incessant narrative, suppressed and hidden beneath the surface. And then there is the voice we send into the world - momentary articulations, an eloquent discourse or a stumbling incoherent murmur. This sounding voice is vunerable, of utmost fragility - a part of us exposed and projected out of us and beyond, into an abyss. And there is the chasm between inside and outside: a dichotomy between the inner and outer voice, between our secret internal monologue and the voice sent into the world and that is heard. And the mouth is at this threshold, embodying a kind of purgatory.

This piece partly asks: what is this inner voice, what is there suppressed, held within, flowing beneath the surface? And what can actually then be said, if anything at all? The text is my own - streams of recitations, with occassional moments of clarity. The work explores the extensive range of colours and sounds naturally produced within the mouth cavity. The electronic part is made entirely from live recordings of Juliet Fraser's recorded voice, and a little of my own.

One Day

Soprano Juliet Fraser has a repertoire dominated by the very old and the very new. Specialising in the gnarly edges of contemporary classical music, she is an active commissioner of new music and has worked particularly closely with composers Pascale Criton, Bernhard Lang, Cassandra Miller, Matthew Shlomowitz and Rebecca Saunders. She regularly performs as a guest soloist with ensembles such as Klangforum Wien, Musikfabrik, Ensemble Modern, Plus-Minus and Talea, and has created duo projects with percussionist Maxime Echardour, double bassist Florentin Ginot and pianist Mark Knoop. Juliet is founder and artistic director of the eavesdropping festival in London, co-director of all that dust, a new label for new music, and co-founder and a core member of EXAUDI vocal ensemble.
