ROTATION - an All Vinyl, All Styles music event which took place on Friday, August 13th at The Continental as part of the San Jose Summer JazzFest…this time, featuring all 7” 45s sets from  DJ Shorkut, Chale Brown and myself…props to Shorkut and Tommy who dropped some choice platters…and let me say Shorkut certainly awed us with his dynamic turntablism - so inspiring! And Thank You to the San Jose revelers who came out with an open-mind and grooved to our multi-genre programming - always appreciate a receptive dance-floor….this is my set...enjoy the ride!

From 18th December, 2021 - ROTATION - Live from Monarch in San Francisco shared decks with David Harness and Jayvi Velasco, while in the lounge, DJ Proof and Ivan Ruiz worked the one and twos with Funk/Soul/Disco sets...this is my set which includes a fair amount of "classics" so, if you're in that listening mode, this should quench your thirst...also featuring a few recent releases to round out my set...and I'll say this - playing vinyl presents that something-something that is distinct and different from programming digital sets...it's not an elitist thing and I can't really explain it any better but it is certainly a unique experience...could be the actual handling of those plastic platters - maybe?? I had missed most of the main room mayhem because I played an extended, 4 hour set in the Bonaparte Room...
This excerpt is from the first hour and a half...musically, I programmed some Soulful House, Deep House, Disco House and few percussive tracks - it all flows nicely...
People were coming in and out of the room all night long and it was certainly great to see so many familiar faces I had not seen in quite some time...

Here's my set from our Happy 4th Of July livestream via Monad Social featuring Mark Farina, DJ Sneak, Destrada and yours truly. Opening for Mark and Sneak is always a chance to dive into the deeper side of things and explore facets of house both of these guys embody to the fullest. America is in a moment of real identity crisis and struggles abound everywhere you look but we didn't let that stop us from enjoying each other and letting the music speak to our deeper connection that no single moment in time can break. Mark Farina is a disc jockey and musician, known for his Chicago house, acid jazz and downtempo works. Notable releases include Mood (KMS Records, 1989) and the Mushroom Jazz series (Om Records, 1996–2011), and recently known also from house compilations El Divinio. He is primarily identified with the house music scene in San Francisco, California. Farina resides in Dallas, Texas, but DJs widely around the world

Cosmic Disco Set #2 - Julius Papp Virtual DJ Set - TOGETHER - 2 Oct 2020

Julius Papp is one whose dedication to music has propelled his career as a producer and DJ in the dance/club music scene. His dance music roots lie in Disco of the 70’s and New Wave of the 80’s. Presently living in San Francisco, he was born and raised in Montreal, Canada, and got tuned into dance music through the city’s flourishing club scene and diverse radio broadcasts. He started collecting vinyl records in the mid 70’s and took to the turntables in 1985, scoring his first major club gig two years later.
 
Hearing the non-stop flow of music and observing the booth where each DJ seamlessly blended each selection were early influences for Julius. Later influences included reading about DJ residencies that were piloted by talented club music programmers that even today, influence the youngest of aspiring DJs.  Legends, like David Mancuso at The Loft & Larry Levan at the Paradise Garage in New York City to Frankie Knuckles at The Warehouse in Chicago and Tony Humphries’ weekly at Zanzibar in New Jersey.  Always sparked by any music listed in those articles, Julius would shop for those titles that have become classics, worshipped by their discerning audiences. To this day, his goal is to keep expanding his foundation in music by being open-minded and eclectic in absorbing the music that truly touches him.
 
That open-minded attitude is what Julius uses to fine-tune his musical palette, which gives him a dominant sound that exudes a deep and soulful perspective.  That dominant sound is (Soulful) House Music – which to him, is about an uplifting positive message. People coming together in unity, with no barriers or restrictions, but rather, with tolerance and the spirit of music, unifying everyone on the dance-floor.  That being said, he blends various musical styles together - including Soul, Latin, Afro, Disco, Jazz and Electronic sounds with such fluidity, that it is difficult at times to put a defining stamp on his sound. Contributing to that is his willingness to take a chance. He always tries to push the envelope by introducing music that deserves exposure, taking his audience on a musical journey with various mood and energy changes.
Not content to limiting his ambitions in the DJ booth, Julius began producing music in 1994. The studio was another outlet for Julius’ creative ideas to flow. His first release was a down-tempo project on the Acid Jazz tip.  He also drew attention as part of the jazz and funk scene in San Francisco via the Mushroom Jazz parties alongside creator and resident Mark Farina.
 
As Julius’s production catalogue grew, so did the amount of labels he released music on including – long tenured labels like “Nervous Records” (NYC), “King Street Sounds” (NYC), “Large Music” (Chicago) and “OM” (SF), to signings on “Soulfuric Recordings” (FL) and Kenny Dope’s “Dope Wax” (NYC) label, as well as Bob Sinclar’s  “Yellow Productions” in Paris. In 2018, Julius released his Phunk Odyssey EP on Miguel Migs’ “Salted Music” label. Co-hosting the long running Salted SF events with Migs, it was an honor to make his artist debut on the label.
 
He also ventured into the label arena with his own “NeoDisco Music” imprint.  Named after the sound that continues to inspire him – the small, independent label offers him an alternate outlet to release his own productions.

During the past 2 years through the pandemic, Julius has remained active with live DJ sets via virtual broadcasts while also returning to regular events in front of a welcoming dance-floor… Let The Music Play…
