GREG WILSON’S EARLY 80’S FLOORFILLERS: 
A fascinating insight on how the fading Jazz-Funk scene gave way to the emerging Electro-Funk movement in the early 80’s, ‘Greg Wilson’s Early 80’s Floorfillers’, marks the 30th anniversary of when these tracks first appeared. Compiled from his record lists of the time, and unfolding month by month, Greg Wilson counts down the Top 10 Floorfillers played at his venues during the key years of ’82 and ’83. Featured, most notably, on his Tuesday sessions at Wigan Pier and Wednesday gatherings at Legend in Manchester, the most cutting-edge weekly black music nights of the era, these were the clubs most associated with the evolving Electro-Funk sound.

The majority of music played on the black scene in the UK was initially only available on import, mainly out of New York during this period, with the club nights described as ‘upfront’, meaning that the DJ’s were way ahead of the curve – what they played now, others played later, or not at all. Without these DJ’s, many now classic dance tracks would never have become UK hits (many without enjoying similar crossover success in the US) – the reason they were released here in the first place was because these specialist DJ’s were breaking them via the underground.

Things would change in a big way during those 2 years; we were entering the hybrid age for dance music, and the oncoming House and Techno and Hip Hop directions would all owe a huge debt to this era of dance alchemy and groove experimentation.

Larry Levan is an undisputable dance music God whose importance cannot be underestimated.

Synonymous with creatively-original and emotionally-charged DJ sets at revered NYC club the Paradise Garage, the curatorship of Larry Levan' sets became known as a genre in itself. This provided the earliest definition of what is now known as garage – the characteristics of which can still be heard in the genre to this day.

Now, the quintessential Larry Levan compilation, "Genius of Time" captures this cultural figure as the prolific producer and remixer he was, while also being a joy to hear, bursting with full-blooded, timeless and life-affirming analogue euphony.

Today, in celebration of the compilation and Levan's legacy, we have something very special for you: a full length mix of Levan and Paradise Garage classics mixed by someone who has become a scene legend in his own right: Justin Berkmann.

Justin Berkmann was a core face at Paradise Garage and a key player in New York dance music scene from the eighties onwards. In 1991 Justin bought Larry Levan, tempting him out of retirement, to London to play at a little club he had founded called Ministry of Sound. Legend has it, Levan overstayed his visit by some THREE MONTHS, spending time with Justin adjusting the sound system and teaching his invaluable knowledge on the texture of sound.

Nicky Siano is the Master of Disco Soul. A pioneer of the dance music scene in the early seventies, Nicky was the owner/designer/DJ of the legendary seventies dance palace The Gallery and went on to become one of the original Studio 54 resident DJs. He worked the DJ booth at Bianca Jagger's infamous Studio 54 birthday party. He inspired and launched the careers of Grace Jones, D.C. La Rue, Loleatta Holloway, Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles, to name a few.

Constant and quality releases just kept coming on and on from 1991 until the early 2000s. 

This first showcase features their early remixes and productions when they exploded on the scene between 1991 and 1993. Don't be surprised to hear a wide variety of artists in this mix. Major labels were still relying on the underground remixers to attract attention and Masters At Work simply became the standard at that time.

Julius Papp is one whose dedication to music has propelled his career as a producer and DJ in the dance/club music scene. His dance music roots lie in Disco of the 70’s and New Wave of the 80’s. Presently living in San Francisco, he was born and raised in Montreal, Canada, and got tuned into dance music through the city’s flourishing club scene and diverse radio broadcasts. He started collecting vinyl records in the mid 70’s and took to the turntables in 1985, scoring his first major club gig two years later.
 
Hearing the non-stop flow of music and observing the booth where each DJ seamlessly blended each selection were early influences for Julius. Later influences included reading about DJ residencies that were piloted by talented club music programmers that even today, influence the youngest of aspiring DJs.  Legends, like David Mancuso at The Loft & Larry Levan at the Paradise Garage in New York City to Frankie Knuckles at The Warehouse in Chicago and Tony Humphries’ weekly at Zanzibar in New Jersey.  Always sparked by any music listed in those articles, Julius would shop for those titles that have become classics, worshipped by their discerning audiences. To this day, his goal is to keep expanding his foundation in music by being open-minded and eclectic in absorbing the music that truly touches him.
 
That open-minded attitude is what Julius uses to fine-tune his musical palette, which gives him a dominant sound that exudes a deep and soulful perspective.  That dominant sound is (Soulful) House Music – which to him, is about an uplifting positive message. People coming together in unity, with no barriers or restrictions, but rather, with tolerance and the spirit of music, unifying everyone on the dance-floor.  That being said, he blends various musical styles together - including Soul, Latin, Afro, Disco, Jazz and Electronic sounds with such fluidity, that it is difficult at times to put a defining stamp on his sound. Contributing to that is his willingness to take a chance. He always tries to push the envelope by introducing music that deserves exposure, taking his audience on a musical journey with various mood and energy changes.
Not content to limiting his ambitions in the DJ booth, Julius began producing music in 1994. The studio was another outlet for Julius’ creative ideas to flow. His first release was a down-tempo project on the Acid Jazz tip.  He also drew attention as part of the jazz and funk scene in San Francisco via the Mushroom Jazz parties alongside creator and resident Mark Farina.
 
As Julius’s production catalogue grew, so did the amount of labels he released music on including – long tenured labels like “Nervous Records” (NYC), “King Street Sounds” (NYC), “Large Music” (Chicago) and “OM” (SF), to signings on “Soulfuric Recordings” (FL) and Kenny Dope’s “Dope Wax” (NYC) label, as well as Bob Sinclar’s  “Yellow Productions” in Paris. In 2018, Julius released his Phunk Odyssey EP on Miguel Migs’ “Salted Music” label. Co-hosting the long running Salted SF events with Migs, it was an honor to make his artist debut on the label.
 
He also ventured into the label arena with his own “NeoDisco Music” imprint.  Named after the sound that continues to inspire him – the small, independent label offers him an alternate outlet to release his own productions.

During the past 2 years through the pandemic, Julius has remained active with live DJ sets via virtual broadcasts while also returning to regular events in front of a welcoming dance-floor… Let The Music Play…
