Blitzing techno from Tbilisi’s finest, @newa takes the reins of number 13 in the Junction 2 mix series.

A resident of techno stronghold Bassiani, Newa is at the forefront of the fledgling underground scene in her home country of Georgia. Growing up classically trained, the Icontrax label boss has made a seamless transition into the electronic music sphere to land huge releases on labels such as Klockworks, Semantica and Arsenik. With her diverse sets exploring low-level bass, squelching acid and potent melodies, she has become a favourite on Ben Klock’s touring event series Photon and showcases why she is one to watch with a standout mix for the Junction 2 series.

Nene H has made a name for herself with her signature boundary-pushing sound, always exploring different paths on which techno can lead her, be it in productions, live sets or DJ mixes. Her most recent works include the 2020 EP “Standard Deviation” in collaboration with the artist Poly Chain, and a terrific release in March of this year, the EP “Beast” on the French label Possession, featuring the remixes of artists VTSS and Hadone. 
 
It is her “in-your-face” spirit, always taking risks to project her music to the next level, that Nene H has brought today in our 12th podcast episode. The occasion for us to get to know more about her artistic and personal peregrinations.

La Mer

La Mer is an Electronic Music Producer, DJ, Cellist and Composer, based in Tel Aviv. She combines her classical roots with her passion for electronic music and creates her own unique sound. She cherishes the idea that genre isn’t the important part of the music, but the flow and progress.
La Mer is one of De Zee Music’s founding members, a group that emphasises the focus on creative collaboration, rather than genre perfection. They hope to spread the word that genre isn’t the foundation, but the outcome. 

"I support hard work, progress and innovation, and I think the "first" women who achieve certain goals are admirable, but is this the world we deserve? 
Growing up, it was clear that if I'll work hard, I'll achieve what I want, but no one came to me at the age of 12 with an "All the Professions in the World" book and let me choose what I want to do in life. It's easy to forget that this matter has a lot of weight on tracking and social constructionism. I was raised towards "aspiration for excellence", but excellence in what subject? It was clear to me that I'll work hard playing the cello and that I will continue to play the cello and that it would be what I would do in the future. But somehow anything that had to do with creation remained "in the drawer". After all, even when I was a teenager, I loved writing music, and I did, but at no point did I think it was something I could really do. Even though my parents raised me to believe I can do anything, it has nothing to do with it. 

It wasn't until my friend invited me to join him in college for music production studies, only then I realized that it was possible. It was so far away from me. Not only was it an unattainable dream, it just wasn't a dream because I didn't even think of it as a possibility. Up until I started studying and creating, I didn't even know any female composers or producers. So, yes, we broke the glass ceiling, but "go tell" a 12-year-old girl she can do these things when there's no woman to look up to and admire. And no, there's no reason in the world for all women in the world to have to fight tooth and nail to get to the places they want, or at least not more than men have to.

Personally, I'm exhausted of having to prove every time that not only I'm good at what I do, but that I'm the best at it. Because if you're not the best, there are enough men who do the job as well as you do. And they're men."

She builds something that has all the ingredients of classic techno and at the same time perfectly mirrors its present sound. She explores the low-level end of the bass-spectrum as well as cunningly introducing squelchy acid together with intense melodies. Newa’s techno is direct with an intense presence, yet never forceful or intrusive.

Nubian Trace — originally founded as my own record label — now marks its first LP release. For the first time, I’m presenting a full-length record that truly represents my sound and vision. A self-release that I’m proud to share. Expect raw, hypnotic club music — carefully selected, deeply rooted in Berlin’s unmistakable energy.
Every detail was chosen with precision. There’s also a bonus track included.
The photograph was taken by me, and the logo reflects the connection to the collective and label where everything began. Nubian Trace stands for its percussive origins — a sound shaped by rhythm, depth, and time.

For the next mix of Bassiani podcast series, NDRX,  the resident of the club has teamed up with Georgia's finest Newa for whom 2017 has been a defining year. The set was recorded at Bassiani as part of the 'Invited by Residents' night.

As DJs, both have a big musical range but also they share the common touchstone that makes this mix so colorful and exciting. Across a mind-bending 150 minutes NDRX and Newa offer an unpredictable, delightful and head spinning dance tunes. They are very comfortable with a diverse aesthetic so the mix contains surprising musical shifts and inventive transitions with dark, punchy textures, driving baselines and untempered thrill.
