Letting Up Despite Great Faults is an American indie dreampop band from Los Angeles, CA and Austin, TX. Making their mark with their acclaimed debut album (self-titled 2009) and Untogether (2012), they carved out a little corner of the dreampop world with their take on electronic shoegaze and indiepop jangle. After taking a hiatus which songwriter Mike Lee hails as their time to "become real adults," they came back to their familiar form with IV (2022). Gearing up for their next release, Reveries, we hear them push forward and further like never before, exploring new sounds and structure with a mature patience and confidence emblematic of "real adults." Now inspired by vastly different genres from drum 'n' bass to post-punk to K-pop, their version of dreampop has become larger and simultaneously very refined. Meticulously mixed by the amazing Melina Duterte (Jay Som), the new album Reveries yet again shows Lee wearing it all on his sleeve.

Junerise is the folk-tinged dreampop project of Austin-based, Utah-transplant singer-songwriter June Bennion, known simply as June (They/Them).

Looking ever skyward, June channels influences from the grounding story-centric songwriting chops of James Taylor and Bruce Springsteen to the ethereal gradient-scapes of The Cocteau Twins and Brian Eno with a dash of The Cure's dance-forward sensibilities. Their songwriting comes from a well of lived experiences growing up as a closeted queer person in the god-fearing Mormon mountain states.

June tackles feelings of isolation, wonder, and perseverance against the odds set against a sunset sky, quickly fading out of view as each song flows from scene to scene as each story is told. Junerise is a long incubated project which at times is downright danceable while also reveling in the beautiful transience of each passing moment.

BIO

While I appreciate music in many genres, I’ve always had a love for electronica… especially ambient, chillout and IDM, likely due to artistic influences in my youth (see “Influences” here: http://synth4ever.com/about-synthever/influences ).

It all started around age 6 when I first heard works done by a Japanese synthesist/composer named Isao Tomita. My parents had bought 3 of his records (Kosmos, The Planets, and The Bermuda Triangle) at a garage sale because the cover artwork “looked cool”.

Little did I know (at the time) that he was a major pioneer in the electronic & analogue synth music scene. When listening to his material, I often dream of soundscapes, distant planets and other such far-away places, and I think my early exposure to his music influenced me for the rest of my life towards a “space ambient” style.

I took piano lessons at a young age for a brief time, but then focused on drumming from age 12. Still, over the years my interest and love for electronic music grew until the point of finally purchasing my first synthesizer in January 2012. Since then I have developed a voracious appetite for all things synth.

DEMOS & MUSIC

When it comes to my synth demos,  I try to showcase what I’ve learnt about the synths I own thus far, and to share with others my love for these synths. I prefer the spontaneity of live performance and hands-on, real-time tweaking of the synth itself.

I like to play music in a more “space ambient” style comprised of long sustained pads, arpeggiators, resonance, reverbs and delay. I find this style allows me great freedom to tweak a synth’s various parameters, play with effects to create new sounds, and create emotional soundscapes that are pleasing to my ear and which take me (and hopefully, the listener) on an emotional journey through electronic music.
