Black Star formed back in 1999 as a 4 piece rock band, after several face lifts, and line up changes they returned with a bang in 2006 as a 5 piece experimental-pop band. The songs have graceful melodies and unique sounds. Their songs will simply stick in your head. They have been described by some as “a cross between Radiohead and Travis”.

In July 2009, the band released their debut album, under an indie label, Fiasco Records.

Their debut single “The Poet” (2019) introduced a band with heart and howl, while 2020’s “I Can’t Sleep” earned praise for its smoky, psychedelic intensity—described by A&R Factory as “beautifully raw.” Known for dynamic vocals, anthemic choruses, and atmospheric grit, The Slow Day quickly carved out a cult following before stepping away in 2020.

Now returning in 2025, the band is set to release new music and reconnect with the stage, starting with their sell-out comeback show at Gullivers in Manchester’s Northern Quarter.

Portrait of a Mastermind from Albuquerque, NM is fueled by powerful guitar riffs and intricate guitar solos. Portrait of a masterminds sound stands apart from other progressive metal. The use of technical souring melodies mixed with brutality to create a technical breed of catchy and intricate metal. Founder of the band Will Kern, who also writes the music, shows his skill and vision through his songwriting. Daniel Duerre, the latest addition to Portrait of a Mastermind, is a perfect fit for complementing and adding a heavy rhythm dynamic to the music. Hannah Dalton, the vocalist and front woman, will astonish and murder with her vocals. Hannah’s vocals can stand with the most heavy and hardcore vocals of any guy. Sam Maestas is an incredible drummer at the age of 18, playing some of the most complex and intricate rhythms and polyrhythms. Tim Atkinson, the bass player, adds his own taste to the music, playing more like a guitar player than a bass player; his solos and backup vocals pull everything together. This group forms to make one of the most interesting progressive metal bands around.
