We recon it’s time for a full Junktion EP on Outplay! You can say Wide Awake is an appropriate title after a wonderful 2015 with a string of EP’s on Sleazy Beats, Razor-n-Tape and Rose Records. This four tracker explores the sound he’s been developing over the years and even touches a newer side. The EP opens with the title track “Wide Awake” and embodies the signature Junktion sound with a summery balearic touch. “What We Are” is a faster synth laden affair coupled with his usual sample action. “Sunny Side Up” is what the title says it is, a sunny disco track driven by a groovy bassline and a funky rhythm guitar. The EP closes down with “Don’t Mess Up” for a more contemplative jazzy track with some smooth sampling and afro touches.

As Hans Peeman’s side project next to his Junktion moniker, New Franklin Theory returns to Outplay with a very personal project. Five carefully produced songs in the form of a mini-album of sorts, which 
showcases his journey into more melodic synth heavy work.

Starting off, “Andromeda Beach” eases you into the spacey atmosphere of the record with dreamy rhodes supported by his distinctive percussion and bass work.
Following, “Homeward” introduces melancholic synth lines grounded by an infectious bass line for a Balearic inspired feel. “Afterburner” ups the tempo with warm arpeggiated Juno sounds and saxy disco samples, which will remind you of his previous work. 
Space-funk-synth-boogie, that’s what comes to mind when listening to “In Orbit”. Instant groove with a solid beat interspersed with brief vocal samples and dreamy rhodes chords. 
As the closer, “The Holtzman Effect” (award for 2018’s most nerdy song title, look it up) sets you off floating away on warm chords and bass together with characteristic space bleeps.

At first glance, Times Are Ruff, (soundcloud & facebook), may look like an outlet for the production outfit of the same name to get their music out there, but there are a handful of releases by other high calibre artists such as Larry DeKat and Awanto 3. The label has a knack of putting out limited cuts of sample heavy house music that is both in high demand and of high quality. Last years ‘Double D’s’ from the Just Checking The Walls EP is a sublime cut and a perfect example of the type of house music we have come to expect from them.

What we have here is the 2nd EP on Times Are Ruff by the man they call Junktion (soundcloud & facebook). As one half of the production duo Fouk alongside Daniel Leseman, he has released on labels like Heist, Razor-N-Tape and under his own name, Sleazy Beats, Rose and Slow Town. As a fan, I look out for everything Junktion, Fouk and Outplay related so when this release was announced, I was like a kid at Christmas.

Todays Premiere is the Times Are Ruff remix of the track Baby I Need. Remixes are such a hard thing to approach, especially when faced with an original by an artist with such a defined sound like Junktion. The beats on this remind me of one of my favourite Phife Dawg lyrics ‘I like my beats hard like 2 day old shit’. A pounding 909 kick drum and snare + clap combo ensure maximum dance floor presence. The track is centred around the funkiest guitar lick, spinning from ear to ear. Layers of lush rhodes chords build with the percussion to create what is a simmering, funk-laden piece of house music. A short respite from the beats sees long and flowing pads behind a filtered drum loop, all the time with that infectious guitar burrowing into your sub-conscious. Times Are Ruff have done a superb job of flipping the original into a brooding funk stomper. The 12” will be out mid April, grab at Juno & Decks.

Make Believe Disco is the newest vinyl-only imprint from Guy and Kris, the Dutch and Danish/Canadian duo behind @SleazyBeats. Originally starting as a blog back in early to mid-2009, Sleazy Beats then quickly transitioned into a record label later that same year, with their first release coming from Eddie C. Fast forward eight years and they've gone through two series of ten releases each. The original catalogue was a little bit on the slo-mo/edit tip while the follow-up series and arguably their hottest, the Black Ops series, was geared more toward the dance floor. Their no digital, no repress policy enacted in 2010 has caught them some flack over the years as many fans have struggled to pick up copies. But they've stuck to it, ensuring that limited stays limited while unfortunately fetching some ridiculous prices on the second-hand market.

Guy and Kris' impressive A&R skills paired with some impeccable timing have helped both their label and certain artists blossom. One of those artists is @JunktionMusic aka Hans Peeman, one half of @JustSayFouk and co-founder of @Outplay. A widely popular follow-up to his "Monologues" EP, "The Great Unknown", which was released on the Black Ops imprint, sold out in a matter of a couple of days (if not less than that) and this happened around the time that the hype around both Junktion and Sleazy Beats was conceivably at an all-time high. With this surefire recipe for success, why not repeat the process?

Today we're extremely excited to bring you Peeman's latest and the second release on newly minted Make Believe Disco with the premiere of the A1 and title track "In Blue Forests". Hans manages to evoke his signature sound while breathing some fresh air into this project. The crisp drums we've come to expect are certainly present here with catchy bass guitar licks making regular appearances. However, the aptly titled track brings forth visions of rain forests and tropical climates utilizing afro-latin percussion rhythms and arpeggiated marimba-like instruments, a step away from the funky and more soulful samples we're accustomed to hearing from the Dutchman. Exemplary synth work rounds out this euphonious cocktail, creating tension in all the right moments and taking a back seat to the groove when needed.

Needless to say, this EP will sell like hotcakes so you better get your pre-orders in as soon as possible or risk being disappointed!

Hans Peeman, perhaps better known as Junktion or as one half of Fouk with label mate and friend Daniel Leseman, also has another side project. New Franklin Theory is his lesser known alias, one focusing a bit less on sampling and more on melodic explorations, with a lot more synth work and instrumentation. He's only released under the moniker once before, a 2 track 10" on his own native Outplay Records that perhaps went a little bit under-appreciated. Now he's back once again on the label with a 5 track mini album of sorts, entitled "Chemical Boogie", to really showcase what he can do.

Peeman's signature percussion is perhaps best heard on the opener, Andromeda Beach, a funk and boogie fuelled jam that's closest to what we've come to know him for. Our premiere today and the A2 on the record, Homeward, features some fantastically spacey cosmic pads and a rumbling bass, lending it a bittersweet, introspective sound. Closing off the first side of the record is Afterburner, an uptempo groover with some addictive synthesized horn-like melodies. Ladies and gentlemen, we have liftoff.

On the flip, the B1, In Orbit, takes you for a ride. The funky bassline and deep rhodes chords paired with the interplanetary atmospheres and effects do the title justice. Finally, The Holtzman Effect, named after a fictional scientific phenomenon, caps off the EP with a hooking subterranean bass that sends you wiggling your butt straight into alien territory.It's refreshing to see a producer so well known for a particular sound continue to explore new avenues and evolve as personal tastes change and mature, but still retain some of that flavour that made his music so irresistible in the first place.
