The planets aligned,  I had a spare afternoon, a bag full of electro and access to my decks again.

Seemed impossible not to do a mix.  Annoyingly, there's still a shelf I cant quite reach with plenty of electro on it but aI still had a full bag from my electro set at Sios night a few weeks back.

Cold Blow is preparing to bring us Bonus Beats: Rare & Unreleased Finnish Electro 1990–2002, a compilation that dives deep into Finland’s underground electro scene during its peak years. The release is accompanied by liner notes from its curator Erkko Lehtinen, a key figure in the scene as a DJ and promoter, whon has also very kindly created this mix with five standouts from the album along with a host of other Nordic delights.

We are so excited to present our 32nd entry into our PPRZ Podcast series by ephemeral objects! Dive into this hour + of deep, textured and thoughtfully selected techno. 

ephemeral objects is a DJ, VJ, music producer, digital and video artist based on unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ Nations (Vancouver, Canada). She has created music videos for forward-thinking Canadian electronic music producers and labels, such as Mood Hut and NAGA. She has performed visuals at influential music venues and festivals throughout British Columbia. ephemeral objects is also half of i+eo an a/v project with IHA, and a resident of Acceleration Radio. Her love of dance music and interest in DJing started in childhood in the late 90s and early 2000s when she stayed up late religiously watching Electric Circus on MuchMusic, the legendary Canadian live dance music show. One of her earliest electronic music purchases was Eiffel 65’s Europop album in grade 4 from HMV in Metrotown, Burnaby, which laid the groundwork for a lifelong appreciation of techno and its various permutations. It wasn’t until recently after finishing graduate school that she revisited and indulged in her interest in DJing, which is now a creative outlet that brings her fulfilment and joy.

My process/mix
This mix captures the type of techno that I deeply appreciate and a space I want to stay in for a while. I love the intentional listening aspect that comes with mixes. I tend to start with ambient/experimental as foreplay for listeners. The mix gradually gets faster, ending with one of my favourite techno-trance tunes that feels like a homage to the early 2000s. I approach DJing similarly to how I approach VJing: psychedelic, hypnotic, euphoric, paying special attention to details, and layering of textures. The beauty of DJing is sculpting moments where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. For me, this is achieved through looping, long blends, and complementing different phrases of tracks. I recorded this mix at home with a DJJ-FLX10 using four decks. Although I mostly mix with three, I use the extra deck to quickly cue the next track to sustain momentum.

I carefully think about the music that I play. I believe that who we choose to play is a vote for who we want to see in music. For this reason, I strive to curate sets to ensure a diverse representation of people, especially producers and labels by femmes and people of colour. Lately, I have been excited by producers and labels from across the Pacific and from the diaspora, which is exemplified in this mix. Big shoutout to Lord Loubbit and CTAFAD for sharing their unreleased music with me. In a small way, I aspire to add more representation in the space of techno that I love, so that others who are also queer, femme, and come from immigrant refugee backgrounds can see themselves in it too. Taking inspiration from Chicago and Detroit’s forbearers, Force Placement has etched a distinct sound that has found his productions and sets at home on labels like LA’s 100% Silk, Detroit’s Clave House and NYC’s Lost Soul Enterprises, to name a few. In celebration of 606 day (the 6th of June) I have put together a non-stop mix of songs that feature the Roland TR-606 drum machine. This mix is focused only on Electro.

The TR-606 & TB-303 launched together in 1981 as a matched pair to provide solo artists the chance to practice without other individuals, solely using the TR-606 and TB-303 as drums and bass lines to practice to, but the programming and artificial sounds made the boxes uncomfortable to use and they soon lost their luster. With a punching, mids-focused sound somewhere between the tone of the 909 and the 808, the 606 was a compact and visually-direct drum machine that had a much more discreet form factor than its siblings. The 606 has a tight punch rather than the boom of the 808, and the percussion has a distinctly metallic quality, even the snare. This gives the 606 a unified feeling that has captured the imaginations of artists for generations.
