The Danza Nativa label is fresh off the back of a fine fifth birthday celebratory compilation but wastes no time getting back to business. Alderaan is the man in charge with his second for the label and 'Transition' kicks off with some mad LFO business melting your mind. Psyk remixes it into a more paired back and spooky subterranean techno prowler. With 'Vortex' there is yet more nocturnal menace with ticking hi-hats seeing rhythm as squelchy, unsettling sounds peel off the beats. 'Futurismo' closes down with a gurgling lead line and distant sci-fi sounds that complete this most futuristic EP.

The seventh V/A release on Mary Yuzovskaya's Monday Off imprint lands on vinyl, with Viels, ORBE, D-Leria, and Yuzovskaya all contributing tracks. Each artist lending their tender efforts to a mutant techno march, Viels' 'Nero' and Orbe's 'Rigging' provide strong titular clues as to their muses; the first uses both the Latin word for "black" and the name of an ancient Roman emperor, suggesting might, militancy and nyctalopic mis-seeing in its dispatch of a blind sonic firestorm; the latter likens production to construction, with its central, low-sined wayfinder sound effect, and dusty hi-hat caroms, suggesting some vessels have windshields that truly can brave the storm. Yuzovskaya's 'Trouble' lands us in hot water, with its startled, far-off vocal snippets and knockout prattles in the left and right lobes; then there's B-leria's closer 'Battito', a living, breathing planetary entity, prone to emit eerily harmonic Close Encounters-style tones and whose atmosphere we dare not cross.

The idea of getting a mix from Karl Meier stemmed from the recent feature on his partner in Downwards act Jonathan Krohn. Speaking with Nic Touhey, Krohn said Meier was the friend that would drop into his basement when he and his friends were listening to music saying something like: “you gotta check this out". Add to this, Meier's two decades experience of DJing in the US and it made us think getting a mix from him would be an interesting exercise. Luckily for us Meier was open to the idea but we were not quite prepared for what the Chicago selector ended up submitting.

Clocking in at just under three hours and featuring over 70 tracks, Meier's podcast is a masterclass in mixing that features a wide range of music past and present. As Meier tells us matter of factly, "I can't see the point in playing three hours of any one style, period." Prior to working with Krohn as Talker, Meier's most recognised contribution to the techno canon was one of the best 12"s in the Sandwell District discography; Born Again by Kalon. For whatever reason, Meier seems quite reticent to discuss that record in great detail but he was more than happy to talk about how electronic music 'ruined his life', what we can expect from Talker, and life in Chicago in general. Berghain 07 | Function

The first time we'd ever heard of Carlos Souffront was in 2006, when Derek Plaslaiko was encouraging us to book him for our first 3/03 acid party (alongside Mark Verbos).  Derek would not shut up about a party in Detroit where Carlos just played Aphex Twin (and his many aliases) vinyl all night long and demolished the place.  So it only followed that we should invite him to play an all acid set on 3/03.  Carlos of course was phenomenal that night and has been a regular guest at The Bunker ever since.  Earlier this year, when Aphex Twin began uploading a seemingly endless stream of unreleased tracks to Soundcloud, it was Derek once again who called us and said: you HAVE to ask Carlos do a mix of this stuff for The Bunker Podcast.  Carlos obliged and did this mix for us live in one take (after a surprise practice session on RBMA radio).  Enjoy!

IT.podcast.s04e03: Israel Vines presents Eye Teeth

Antenes is the name multidisciplinarian Lori Napolean currently works under, making her debut as a producer earlier this year with a firing triplet of modular techno workouts on the L.I.E.S. White Label series after first serving note of her talents on a prior label compilation. Her production chops go back further however, with Napolean operating a laboratory of self-made analogue sequencers and synth modules for several years that incorporate telephone switchboards, built and manipulated in the name of rhythmic, sonic, and spatial exploration. If you’ve watched the modular synth documentary I Dream Of Wires, you are probably aware of Napolean’s endeavours, but those that haven’t can watch her part here.

If we were to trace the lineage of this podcast, then it all began with the conversation between Aurora Halal and former Juno Plus man Scott Wilson leading up to the feature we ran on the Mutual Dreaming founder in early 2014. It was then that Halal mentioned in passing one of the regular selectors at Mutual Dreaming, Lori Napolean, whom she referred to as ‘The Brookyln Hauff’. Intrigued by this comparison we made contact with Napolean soon after, laying the groundwork for the two hour techno session now published. Does the comparison stand up? In truth, Napolean’s talents as a selector would compare favourably with any high profile DJ out there on the basis of this mix.

A quick glance at the supplied tracklisting should elicit an excitable reaction in any self-respecting fan of techno, drawing through several generations of the genre’s exponents, bookened by some local field recordings. We’ve been waiting some time for this mix from Antenes and it’s been worth it!
