It seems pointless and faintly insulting to try and condense the work of Tadd Mullinix into a few introductory paragraphs. Whether it's as James T Cotton/JTC, Dabrye, Charles Manier or his various collaborative endeavours, the Ann Arbor-based Mullinix has quietly been schooling producers and audiences alike for almost fifteen years, with the majority of his output split between the Ghostly International/Spectral Sound axis. Despite the close affiliation to Ghostly, Mullinix also rolls deep with Nation, the Chicago-based record label overseen by Melvin 'Traxx' Oliphant III. Along with Traxx, D'Marc Cantu and Beau Wanzer, Mullinix has played an integral role in furthering the Jakbeat ethos that Nation channels through its every pore, and it was Nation that facilitated the arrival of Mullinix's collection of Charles Manier material which was one of our favourite albums of last year.

Distilling the nervous, primitive music energy of bands such CHBB and Liaisons Dangereuses, and channeling it through his own lopsided production methods cultivated over an unspecified amount of time, the Charles Manier LP has the capacity to burn turntable styli, perforate eardrums, and incite more adventurous dancefloors, probably remaining a collection of music that soundtracks many memories in dark, dank spaces for years to come without getting the wider recognition it truly deserves. We love the album so much that when the opportunity arose to get a mix from Mullinix, the temptation to get a Manier podcast from him was too much to resist.

Those unfamiliar with the album should consider this resultant seventy two minute mix from Mullinix the perfect introduction to his work as Charles Manier, which pulls you through wave sounds from Severed Heads, Chris & Cosey, Mark Lane, Das Ding, Liaisons Dangereuses and more. Going forward, Mullinix look set to maintain his creative output across his many aliases, and is also on the cusp of launching his own Bopside label. The longtime BBC Radio 1 host talks about the liberation of leaving broadcasting, her pivot to fiction writing and her party series, Before Midnight.

If you grew up in the UK, chances are you've heard Annie Mac on the radio. The Irish native started on the airwaves in 2004 when she was 26. She hosted a nightly programme called Future Sounds, before eventually moving to a Friday night dance music show, which catapulted her into the pop cultural zeitgeist. 

Being at the BBC was a boon to her career, but as she reveals in this Exchange—her second appearance on the series—it also came with its limitations. She left the media giant in 2021 to spend more time with her family, and to pursue her own projects without the inhibition of BBC codes of conduct on matters around free speech. Since departing, she has been outspoken about politics and engaged in ongoing advocacy work and calls for change as an independent curator and podcast host.

Annie Mac also speaks to Exchange host Chloe Lula about the art of interviewing; her popular party series, Before Midnight; her pivot to writing; how getting older has shaped her view of success; and what it means to lead the "good life." She has also published two novels, both of which pull from loosely autobiographical topics: The Troubles in Ireland, the music industry in London and bigger thematic arcs such as navigating motherhood and grief. An essential piece of DJ History here! Starting in the early 1980s, Mills, using the name "The Wizard", was a recurring guest DJ on "The Electrifying Mojo" radio show on WJLB in Detroit. He performed DJ tricks like beat juggling and scratching during his sets (some of which were pre-recorded).
