They found Danool by mistake. That is how goblins find most things — by accident, hunger, or following something shinier than they should. The city did not call to them. It simply existed, and that was invitation enough.

There were six in the band, but only five rubies in the golden bucket. The King shared them out evenly. Goblins are nothing if not fair. But math is cruel. Smorr was the odd one out.

He saw it in the reflection — red glimmers in his eyes. He thought it meant destiny. It meant lunch.

The automaton didn’t care for goblin fairness. It appeared from behind a pillar, looked directly at Smorr, and dragged him down a chute while he squealed like a greased potato. The others laughed. They always do. Except the King. The King knows what rubies are.
