On this episode meet 1984 Silver Medalist in the Summer Olympics, Nelson Vails. AKA Nelly and the Cheetah. Nelly is the 1st African American to medal in cycling. He has also been  2005 inducted into the Lehigh Valley Velodrome Cycling Hall of Fame as well as the US Bicycle Hall of Fame. He was back in Iowa for another RAGBRAI and we were lucky to get to spend some time with Nelly throughout the week. Episode 214: Meet Olympian Medalist Nelson Vails, Retired Road and Track Cyclist

This week meet Jeff Van Genderen, executive director for the Dream Team. He has been a mentor with the Dream Team since 2017 and shares with us plans for the 50th RAGBRAI. The Dream Team is a 5 month mentorship program for youth in the Des Moines area. The goal is to learn life skills, and so much more, one pedal stroke at a time. This is a completely volunteer based organization and this time of year they are getting ready to launch with a new team of both volunteer mentors along with the next generation of youth cyclists. RAGBRAI director Matt Phippen is on this episode to provide a recap of the 2023 RAGBRAI Route Inspection Ride. A small team of cyclists joined Matt in early June to pedal the same route that riders will ride during RAGBRAI. Matt talks with Murph about road conditions, how he is preparing the towns and also addresses a few hot topics like the mandatory 2 miles of gravel, and the status of the Guiness World Record attempt. Matt’s early advice: train for the hills, plan to get up early each day this year, and stay stocked up on water and nutrition as you ride across Iowa!
