This song can be interpreted in many ways, however, my inspiration for the lyric came from Darren Shan's character, Lord Loss, from his award winning book series, The Demonata. In this piece I'm looking at things from his [Lord Loss] perspective, rather than the protagonists' of the series.

Lord Loss

Frost Flowers is a duet composed for Viola & Classical Guitar. The piece was conceived at the same time I was working on some wildlife soundtracks, which in turn influenced it’s emotive style and also the name of the piece. The title derives from when the sap in the stem of plants expands due to freezing weather conditions, causing long, think cracks to form along the length of the steam. Water is then drawn through these cracks by capillary action, freezing upon contact with the air. This process is repeated, causing thin ‘petals’ or Frost Flowers to form.

This piece along with another was written entirely using pen and manuscript, it was then transferred over electronically only to cover up the bad penmanship. This was the first time composing this way and I believe it adds a human-like quality to the piece, by composing more instinctively.

Stephen Kavanagh is a 23 year old native of Rush, Co. Dublin. He began his musical education at Dundalk Institute of Technology were he gained a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Music, studying under David Stalling and briefly with Ian Wilson and Elibhis Farrell. In 2012 Stephen entered Trinity College Dublin to study an M.Phil in Music Composition under Evangelia Rigaki and Matthew Barnson.

Stephen is inspired by both old and new musical traditions, ranging from spectralism to minimalism. In his work, he tries to transport the listener through the emotional world of everyday life in which moments are depicted and offered to the listener. He has received numerous performances the most recent of which included a performance in the Kevin Barry room in the NCH and The Samuel Beckett Theatre.
