Unsere Nr. 235 kommt heute von einem international bekannten DJ und Producer, welchen ich seit einer geraumen Zeit aufmerksam verfolge. Die Rede ist von dem in Toronto wohnhaften Mustafa Ismaeel. Geboren im Irak, aufgewachsen in Indien und gereift in Kanada… interkulturelle Kompetenzen hat dieser Mann definitiv in seinem alles andere als linearen Leben erworben. Nicht ohne Grund hat seine Biographie einen starken Einfluss auf seinen einzigartigen Musikstil genommen. Er selber beschreibt dies mit dem Ausloten und der Neudefinition von Grenzen. Grenzen denen er selber immer wieder aufs Neue ausgesetzt war. Und Grenzen, die er selber für sich gestalten musste.  

Das von Ihnen eingespielte Set ist eine spannende ‚afterhoureske‘ Reise ins Dickicht der melodischen, hypnotischen und teils verspielten elektronischen Musik. Angereichert mit einer Menge an Instrumental- und Vocalpassagen, verleiht er der Aufnahme einen samtweichen und vor allem sonnigen Charakter voll des positiven Gefühls. Etwas, was ich in der aktuell unsicheren Zeit gut gebrauchen kann und mich tatsächlich mit einem guten Gefühl nach dem Hören entlässt. Neben all des positiven Charakters vergisst er aber nicht die gehörige Portion an Tiefgang in seinem Set zu implementieren. Dadurch hält er gewagt, aber gekonnt, die Waage zwischen Leichtigkeit und Nachdenklichkeit. 

Schnallt euch an… Ich kann mich nur wiederholen, aber es erwartet euch eine Reise durch verspielte und hypnothische Felder, die wie gemacht für eine Afterhour sind….seid gespannt.

Interview:

What are your musical influences? What is your musical background?

My musical influences are a quite broad range of genres and artists, but
i also realize that there is many similarities and patterns that are
shared between them. For me i like meaningful music, it can be anything
from minimal house to progressive.

My background in music was mainly vocals when i was a young kid, and
then in the mid teenager years i started playing acoustic guitar and
hand drums. I was always a music collector and lover of different
somewhat underground genres like dub reggae, Indie, Hip Hop and then
elctronic music.

What makes good “afterhour”?

For me a good afterhour is about the vibe, the people and the purity and
consistency of the sound. Solid groovy sound that is somewhat minimal
and comfortable to the ears. Storytelling for an emotionally intelligent
setting.

Do you have any thoughts you would like to share about your set?

This is the first studio recorded podcast I’m putting out after more
than a year. it took me a while to make one due to traveling and studio
work so im happy to be finaly sharing this with my listeners. Hope you
enjoy this groovy afterhour journey.

Digging deep into the land of his subconscious, Rumba Red calls on experiences of sounds and rhythms when he collects the music for his DJ sets. After time abroad in Europe and South America, he’s returned to his spiritual home of Toronto to contribute on and off the dancefloor. 

Whether through the organization of his Floorplay party series, publishing print magazines about experimental music and art, or designing the visual manifestation of a community built on sound, Matteo cannot extricate himself from the role music plays in his life.

Never far from a melody and no stranger to a sultry groove or bassline, Matteo is always bonding the history of house with the vulnerable, but hopeful, future. His selections are as honest as they are varied—stretching from live disco cuts of the ‘70s to early 2000s minimal classics and eclectic Italian ‘80s reworks. 

For Rumba, though, it’s less about the kind of music than the opportunity it affords; how it can maintain a sense of grounding in the midst of a flight to your highest self.
