An alumni of the 2016 Red Bull Music Academy in Montréal, Ketan Bahirat AKA Oceantied boasts a genre-hopping production talent indebted to his own wide-ranging taste, which floats from post-rock and Indian classical music to footwork, New Age and beyond. His debut EP as Oceantied, Tribes, is the result of two years of work, and finds Bahirat pushing club tunes into unexpected rhythmic and instrumental directions.

Debuting here is “Streets,” a melange of detuned drums and metallic shakers snaking around a watery melody and imposing sub-bass. The track twice breaks into a spoken-word sample, highlighting Oceantied’s ear for incorporating found sounds of his native country into an undeniably forward-facing framework. Racing past 160 BPM, there’s a spiral of resonant rhythms and interlocking melodic detail, culminating in a a junglist break. “Streets,” and the Tribes EP it appears on, is yet another exciting example of Oceantied’s promising production chops.

Agar humare desh ke log bekhabar rahe, toh har koi shaitaan aake humari soch ko galat disha main bhadka sakta hai. Chetavni, our debut album, drops on February 7th. Inquilab ka waqt aa gaya hai doston, insani haivaano se raho khabardaar aur awaaz uthao.

Its been five years after the release of the seminal Laaj Watte Kai, the multi-lingual hip-hop group that has come to represent the socio-political conscience of the city’s youth and nurtured the kind of brotherhood and creative energy previously seen in pioneering collectives such as Boy Better Know (UK), Wu-Tang Clan (US), Odd Future (US) and Brockhampton (US) . Chetavni arrives at a pivotal moment in Indian history, with class-inequality and sectarian violence seemingly being seeped into the legal and social fabric of Indian society. MC Mawali, Tod Fod, 100RBH, Maharya and BamBoy pull no punches in their critique of the Indian state, delivering scathing indictments of the ruling elite that come packaged in witty, blink and you might miss them, punchlines. In 2019, they released The Warli Revolt, a collaborative piece with Prakash Bhoir that became an anthem for the Save Aarey movement. Album highlights such as Aatank, Bhoiye, Kranti Havi and Khabardaar are poised to become the same.

Featuring production by BamBoy, NaaR and Raakshas, Chetavni explores a glacial, minimalistic soundscape, relying on guttural basslines and scattered Indian samples to drive the songs forward and paying homage to the crew’s inspirations from the UK’s grime and dub scenes.

The very first draft of this compilation was being workshopped by the end of June, 2019. The world was in a precarious place then too, but by the time we had arrived at an LP ready for release it was being plunged headfirst into a new era. The abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir, followed by the attempted re-writing of India’s citizenship laws had spawned the first sustained wave of protests in India since Prime Minister Modi and his NDA government had assumed power in 2014.

So we stayed its release, feeling that maybe this was not the moment for a compilation that dwelt so heavily on the interior lives of artists. Then, before any of us could catch our breath, the new year brought in its own fresh wave of disasters and a global pandemic. Now, as we watch the shock doctrine be applied in its crudest form all around us, the quaintness of this compilation has taken on new meaning.

What started as an exciting first step in our plans for the new decade is now a time capsule. Those moments in the album that seemed wary of the future now sound like moments of premonition. The silly and fun parts are welcome reprieve to the mood of the planet nowadays. But the album is underscored by an unawareness of just how much the world was going to change.

The 12 track FRNDS & FMLY ’20 offers a broader sonic palette compared to our first compilation (F&F’16) cutting through genres, mood and intent. While the label regulars follow their own tangents, new recruits in Flekke, Jevan Antony, Akrti and Murane Athma x Aniruddha Prabhu further expand the sound of  Consolidate.
