In the history of dance music, certain times and places have been essential to the evolution of the culture. New York in the 1970s bringing the rise of disco. Chicago in the late 80s with the invention of house music.
Now Gold Bear, the DJ and producer out of California’s Bay Area, is adding Paris in the 1920s to that list with his new EP, 20s Paris, out now on Feral One Records.
So how does someone producing music in 2023 make 1920s Paris matter to dance music? Well, history buffs know that Paris in the 1920s wasn’t just a creative center for one artform. It was the central hub that defined the artistic trends around the world.
Artists like F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and Gertrude Stein descended on the French capital, spent their evenings smoking and drinking together, then left with some of their most legendary works to date.
Whether 20s Paris will be Gold Bear’s most legendary work remains to be seen, but within these two tracks, he captured that same creative spirit.
The EPs title track opens with a sense of wonder. No drums. Just atmospheric eclecticism. Whether the track will shape into house or hip hop or D&B; it’s not immediately clear until a four-on-the-floor kick lights the path ahead.
That path leads not to a steaming nightclub with lasers flashing at a jackhammers pace (neither lasers nor jackhammers existed in the 1920s) but instead to a moody lounge where creators of all kinds can gather and ideate together as chill, moody beats and pads coalesce in the background.
Then when everyone’s had their fill of sitting and talking, it’s time to rave it up to the second track, “Nasty.” Deep, heavy grooves. Big, towering kicks. A bumping, throbbing bass line. This track lives up to its namesake and more.

I don't usually put descriptions on my songs anymore but this one is an exception.

The cover art of this beat tape actually comes from art pieces I made during primary school. I came across them when I was clearing out some old things that were taking too much space and I found my end-of-the-year report cards. Each of them said that I was already a creative child with attention to detail and that my art skills had a lot of potential, with the same thing for music. I find it fascinating that my teachers already saw something in me even though I don't remember a single thing, and I probably only gained true sentience at around 11 years old.

I'm now finishing university and seeing how far I've come as a visual creative, audial creative, and as a person never ceases to humble me. Thank you all for everything.
