This week on THE JANUS ADAMS SHOW: “The Dream: Dr. King, Max Roach, and The Freedom NOW Suite.” Honoring the Dream of social justice, the Struggle for human rights, and two birthdays: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15) and the legendary drummer, composer, Jazz pioneer, human rights activist, MacArthur “genius” Award-winner Max Roach (January 8). Roach was married to show host, Janus Adams.  

The show features: excerpts from Roach’s “The Dream” a “duet” for solo drum and Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” oration; excerpts from “WE INSIST! The Freedom NOW Suite”; events at the Library of Congress; and a discussion of the man, his music, and the times in which he lived.

Many artists have famously spoken out about the importance of owning their masters and have also equated elements of the music industry to slavery such as Prince and Nipsey Hu$$le. These artists are depicted on the peak of the mountain in the end sequence of the video, which I climb to join them. The story is an adaptation of my own experience in the music industry. In 2019 I bought back my own masters, which was my mountain to climb.

Berlin-based Swedish saxophonist Otis Sandsjö returns with the eagerly-awaited sequel to "Y-OTIS". Sandsjö and his close associate, bassist/producer Petter Eldh (of Koma Saxo), deepen their vision of genre-bending, forward-looking "liquid jazz" of tomorrow. The core group also features Dan Nicholls on keys and Tilo Weber on drums, plus Jonas Kullhammar and Per "Texas" Johansson on flutes (check "tremendoce").

Diving deep into "Y-OTIS 2", you'll find details and ideas galore. The album is an inviting and inspiring audio mosaic, which links back into the previous Sandsjö/Eldh collaborations, namely "Y-OTIS" and "Koma Saxo". The result is a balanced album which quenches your thirst while making you more thirsty in the process. In other words, the many micro moods and sonic levels herein invite repeated listening, while the underlying rhythmic approach is informed as much by hiphop and electronica as by jazz, making the music approachable in a very natural way.

It seems unnecessary to pull the album apart by name-checking individual tracks but just for the sake of easy introduction, the single cuts "tremendoce", "ity bity" and "abysmal" offer one alternative of sign posts along which to navigate. "tremendoce" brings in Swedish jazz great Jonas Kullhammar (of Koma Saxo) and Per "Texas" Johansson, introducing an infectious flute loop integrating into the Y-OTIS sound, making it organic to the bone. "ity bity" could be built on a new wave synth sample (but it's not) and "abysmal" brings more serene, even ambient-sounding sonic pathways into the map. It all belongs together, and makes for a sound which is instantly recognisable and constantly fresh. This is "Mauerpark liquid jazz" for the new decade.
