damn impressive, especially since you pulled this all together solo! really strong arrangement and a gorgeous catchy chorus. I quite like the vocal chorus harmony parts - has a very live feel to it, which makes it all the more vibrant.  really like this a lot man.

The Overstory:

The Overstory won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2019. This novel by Richard Powers explores themes of the interconnectedness of life and the impact of humanity on nature. 

I found the book very powerful as I very much enjoyed the rich prose and the way he could make me see the world in a new way. He created different lenses to glimpse and better understand the hearts of widely different characters. This included the key player of nature herself. In the end, the book is both a beautiful meditation on nature and a call to action, urging readers to reconsider their relationship with the environment. 

My new song's theme was influenced by this novel not in a direct or intentional way but as something that emerged more slowly and organically. I finished this book during my song's build process. Reverberations, echoes and rhythms of the Overstory seem to lace the song lattice like vines on a tree. 

There were no wailing Wiccans in the book but plenty of very passionate earth connected characters. There was also some good cries of grief and pain. I think some of this grief informed my late arriving background vocals in the last chorus. They have a quality of choral witch-like wailing to my ears. I almost discarded them BUT the sound of this background texture grew on me like a fungus over time and really began to anchor my song direction. This was not intentional either until my brain later latched on to it as a means to inspire the final song form and ending.

My next original song, Earth and the Wailing Wiccans, will be officially released to all streaming services on Friday, 16 August 2024!

The Eclectic Collective — composition and mix

  This is the second song in a row that The Eclectic Collective is releasing in as many weeks that was written by Chris. We love working on his songs, and all jumped at the chance to play with this one, as well. He wrote it on an acoustic guitar, onto which he also put some heavy reverb, giving it an ethereal, chordal sound. To that bare bones, Josh fist added his four-string fretless bass to a click track, of all things. Luckily, Ken swooped in soon after and gave it a proper beat with his lively percussion performance. 
  Once the rhythm section was complete, Tez added his melodic, golden-tone guiar in there. Then, it was JJ's turn. He added not only the piano and synth, but wrote the lyrics and sang it, as well. 
  This song was actually mixed by the group, as we all added our parts, although Ken did some final adjustments, too.
  JJ's lyrics tell the story of the first people to reach Easter Island, millenia ago. The wonder of the journey and the discovery of a new home, while using the materials available to survive. Here are his original lyrics.

The Eclectic Collective -- composition

This song began its life when Ken came to with a series of drum skeletons about half a year ago with the intent of starting several McDonald's themed songs that The Mysterious Decibel was writing for the group. Well MD had some life getting in the way and then decided to pursue another project full time, leaving us with four solid songs, but without vocals. Ken ended up supplying the solid lead vocals and harmonies you hear the whole way through, with original lyrics that he also wrote.
  But before any of that happened, we got this song together. Stephen was first up, coming up with the main guitar riffs that carry the whole way through. Josh responded quickly to the his guitar parts with some matching bass to go along with it. 
  About this time, Mark heard the funky break in there, and so installed every part of it all on his own, including the clavinet, organ, bass, and drums. Although, Ken is also still playing in the break, as well. When we had it pretty well set, Tez came along and added some fiery guitar to go along with Stephen's. 
  Once we had it in the can, we turned it over to Mark for his expert mix. Stephen mastered it for us, too, for the final, winning touch.
  This ended up being a satisfying product of The Eclectic Collective's teamwork. We hope you enjoyed listening to it as much as we enjoyed creating it.

Scale The Riverbank - The Eclectic Collective

The twinkling lights of Christmas trees, the rhythmic chaos of holiday preparations, and the warmth of familiarity that settles in after the season’s initial rush—this is the essence of my latest composition, *Lights Twinkle*. As a Christmas music piece crafted for voice, percussion ensemble, taiko drums, and harp, *Lights Twinkle* offers a unique auditory experience that blends tradition with innovation.

At its core, *Lights Twinkle* is a story told through sound and haikus. These succinct and rhythmic poetic forms perfectly complement my polyrhythmic compositional approach. Their structured rhythm provides a steady foundation amidst the layered complexity of the music. Moreover, I found inspiration in exploring a Japanese-influenced take on Christmas traditions, pairing the poetic brevity of haikus with the resonant power of taiko drums.

The harp takes center stage alongside the percussion ensemble, creating a sonic tapestry that is both grounded and ethereal. I’ve always loved how the harp blends with percussion, particularly the marimba. The harp’s dreamy quality elevates the piece, while percussion keeps it rooted, primal, and rhythmic—a delicate interplay of textures. I often think of the harp as a "pretty percussion instrument," and in *Lights Twinkle*, it shines in that role.

One magical moment during the composition process was when I accidentally copy-pasted the taiko drum pulse onto the marimba track. What could have been a mistake became a serendipitous breakthrough: the marimba’s introduction brought a fresh yet comfortably memorable rhythm to the piece. Another unforgettable moment was adding a "Carol of the Bells" rhythmic motif to the finale, tying the music to timeless Christmas emotions. Every time I hear that section, it feels like reconnecting with a cherished memory.

Polyrhythms naturally introduce complexity, but my goal was to make them inviting, not overwhelming. To achieve this, I kept the orchestration focused: no more than three rhythmic ideas sound simultaneously. Carefully placed accents reinforce the base pulse, anchoring the listener and tying the textures together. These choices ensure that *Lights Twinkle* feels intricate yet approachable, inviting repeated listens to fully appreciate its layers.

The haiku *“Light’s twinkle, on evergreen”* inspired the entire piece. It captures the pure joy of a Christmas tree, a universal symbol of the season. Through the music, I hope to evoke the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations, the unpredictability of new traditions, and the eventual comfort and warmth they bring. By the third listen, I believe audiences will feel at home in this soundscape, appreciating its connection to the season’s rhythms and emotions.

Ultimately, *Lights Twinkle* is my gift to listeners—a fresh yet familiar experience of Christmas. I hope it becomes part of your holiday traditions, offering warmth, wonder, and a little rhythmic sparkle to the season.

This song started when as a vague idea Josh came up with while listening to Lionel Richie's All Night Long followed by Michael McDonald's song Sweet Freedom. He wanted to create a song that uses that same basic structure because those are both perfect pop songs in his opinion. He came up with a rough structure on his bass and piano before enlisting the help of his team of musical superheroes. 
  Ken was first up to bat, adding his magical drums and helping Josh find a groove on his bass. Ken later added the hand percussion that adds a spicy drive to the song, too. Next up was Mark, who added the funky clavinet throughout. Stephen threw down after Ken, adding some foundational guitar to the stew. He also added the awesome banjo you hear trickling throughout. Very shortly after, Tez came through with the trippy guitar solo at the end. JJ followed with the breathy organ that lifts the whole thing aloft.
  Now that we had a solid foundation to work with, Josh added the synth "horn" part in the middle, as well as the vocals, including the third harmony part in the choruses. JJ added the fifth harmony part in the choruses soon after. He also added the synth hooks throughout and synth solo at the end. Not stopping there, he also added the electric piano intro, with Ken's drums, and Stephen, who added the electric guitar in that part, as well.
  Now that the whole thing was in the can, it was time for a mix. One of our resident production experts, Stephen, did the honors, as well as the mastering. 
  This is an example of everyone in the Eclectic Collective adding just the right puzzle piece to form the bigger picture. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it.
