Dead gone is a term that I misunderstood in terms of spelling, but still picked up in speech as a young child while hanging around my Uncle’s. Technically the correct term would be spelled “daggone”, from the phrase “doggone it”. It’s a southern saying, (not uncommon in Virginia) which expresses disgust, surprise, or disbelief. After learning of the correct spelling I thought to change the song title to fit it; but, something was telling me I would lose points with myself for creativity. Changing it to be literally correct and fit with the rest of the world would not be The Champion’s Kid. The spelling I chose fits the entire message I meant to convey in the song being it that the old me is “dead and gone”.  I feel that although I personalized the song it can still be one that is enjoyed by the masses.  I want to encourage people who feel where I’m coming from, if not everyone, to continue to find their true identity in Christ, and at the same time don’t abandon their own personality; for we are all unique individuals meant to be different yet loved the same.  It isn’t a preachy song although I have been made new already. You’ll hear me mention that I am still flawed and in need of a savior, as we all are. I don’t want old believers to forget that; nor do I want new believers to be discouraged in having failed. Lastly, I don’t want my friends who are non-believers to think poorly of believers as a whole because of a bad experience with a believer who they thought should be “perfect”. A believer is just like everyone in this world who has acknowledged that they are not perfect. The soul difference is they know they cannot be better alone, and they don’t place their faith in man who is also not perfect, but rather in a God who is. With that being said, enjoy “Dead Gone” and the life style that comes with it!
