Project Salomé  is a complex reworking of the 1st-century story of Salomé from the perspective of the victim Salomé herself.

Conceived and directed by SIngapore director Ong Keng Sen, the play splits itself into three components.
One - Janice Koh playing several roles in Oscar Wilde’s  1891 play including Salomé, her stepfather Herod, her mother Herodias and the Syrian captain,
Two - a film screened on stage involving Ong’s encounter with Michael(a) Daoud, a queer performance artist who fled Syria and now lives in Berlin.
Three - Koh also playing a professional tennis player who has an affair with a married politician in a contemporary tale that unfolds on Instagram(@thesalomecomplex) weeks before the show ran, only finding resolution in the last moments of the performance.

Throughout runs the fourth element. A six channel score, composed and performed live by Kaffe Matthews seated in the middle of the audience. HERE you can hear a stereo extract of Scene 1/ the Prologue.

Commissioned by Singapore International Arts festival 2022, this extraordinary collaboration performed at the Victoria Theatre, Singapore 24-26.5.22 to thrilled audiences.

And just between that small circle of trees, it’s shady and quiet. And there are no mosquitoes and the stereo insects walking from camp across the fields are magnificent. Different crickets and grasshoppers that chirrup very different patterns as you go. I decide I’ll make an improvised performance within those trees tomorrow. At this time. 2pm. Live sampling and processing this spot and the Ripley. We are noisy people. Endless talk and looking and eating and photographing, always sharing. It'Il be good just to listen.

a 34 minute recording from inside this empty boutique in Milton Keynes mk shopping centre, where  'The Lock Shift songs',   a song and 43 channel sound installation, was playing from three interlinked Sonic Beds.
Made by Matthews after an 86 mile solo walk following the Grand Union canal from her studio in Hackney, London.

' zu Bong' is a sonic bike work made for Bonn.  Mapped to the city’s centre streets from Oxfordstrasse in the North to Botanische Garten in the south, the river Rhine in the east to Wittelsbacherring in the west, audience/visitors were invited to come take out a bike and cruise through the streets to hear them transformed by the music playing from the bike and changing with the route   as they rode.

Made by Matthews using sonic mapper gizmo written by Dave Griffiths and the Bicrophonic Research Institute,  made for 'The swamp that was' and developed for 'Opera fiXi'.

Matthews conceived of the piece during a 10 day residency in Bonn, April 2014.  It was commissioned by Carsten Seiffarth for bonn hoeren festival 2014.

This is a live recording made from the bike heading down to the Rhine from the city park.

'Ya slip ta bang' is Matthews 12th sonic bike work. This time for Dublin, working with author Mia Gallagher and her debut novel 'Hellfire' (Penguin Ireland 2006)

The music is made for the route the cyclist takes and changes with the journey. Here recorded live from the bike, from somewhere in the middle and along to the Liffy....

Yird Muin Starn, old Scots for Earth Moon Star, is McIntosh Matthews new public artwork set in the Galloway Forest, Scotland, Europe’s first Dark Sky Park. Inspired by the Bothy movement, the sky and nature, the artists have made 3 elements. 15 Space suits for environmental comfort, Three Sky Gazer chairs for astronomical contemplation and this vinyl Album of cosmological songs and exquisitely sonified constellations.

‘ A sonic map of the artwork and the cosmos, the album is at once funny, moving and informative.’

A selection of extracts from the twelve chapters of music made by Matthews for  'The Incredible Adventures of Border Crossers '
A six hour continuous performance, installation, karaoke and fashion runway, commissioned for the opening of Singapour en France and premiered at Palais de Tokyo Paris  24.3.15.

A stunning combination of music, visual culture, live video, fashion, documentary and movement that envisioned communications in a not-so-distant future megapolis, amidst a heterotopia of individuals.

Directed by Ong Keng Sen and forged in collaboration with Kaffe Matthews(composer, audio design), Brian Gothong Tan,(image design and projection) Chris Lee of Asylum(space design) Reckless Ericka (costume) and Francis Ng (photographic installation), it was performed in English, Spanish, Italian, Romanian, French, German, Burmese, Lao, Cambodian, Vietnamese, Thai, Tagalog, Bahasa Indonesia, Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, Hindi and other languages of the border crossers.

With 12 projections screens and 12 channels of music taking the audience through the 12 chapters of the show, it created a dazzing feast.

'Love Shark'  is a four channel solo by Matthews in which she duets live with 6 oscillators driven by 6 hammerhead sharks whose journeys were recorded north of Wolf Island, Galapagos April 2009. Matthews dived with, recorded underwater and filmed hammerheads whilst on a month's residency on the Galapagos islands.  She later worked with shark scientists (Migramar) who gave her this shark hunting journey data used to drive the 'shark synthesizer', made in collaboration with Adam Parkinson.

Matthews plays live with pan-sonic, extracted from the 100 hours that were recorded over 5 weeks.

In 1996,  artists David Crawforth and Hayley Newman and sound artists Mika Vainio and Ilpo Väisänen - Pan Sonic - worked symbiotically at Beaconsfield public gallery space in London every day for five weeks. The live installation featured an industrial video oscilloscope,  Pan sonic's precious sound machine, the typewriter, and the original prototype for Turbo Sound's earth shaking Floodlight PA system.

Rude mechanics were unskilled assistants used in medical operations who performed rudimentary tasks such as restraining and muffling un-anaethsetised patients as well as catching dismembered body parts and fluids in buckets. Crawforth and Newman inhabited and evolved the physical environment and Pan sonic monitored the sounds of that activity, feeding in their own analogue compositions. This process was animated by the input of invited musicians who came and contributed a six hour injection into the process. 

These two tracks are moments during Matthews play, extracted from the 100 hours that were recorded over the 5 weeks.

Lifting concrete lightly was a four hour improvised performance by pan European electronics ensemble MIMEO, made to transform the Serpentine Gallery Oscar Niemeyer Summer Pavilion London through live play.  Directed by Kaffe Matthews, it was a seminal moment for the art scene in London.

The MIMEO players were: Cor Fuhler, Gert-Jan Prins, Raphael Toral, Peter Rehberg, Marcus Schmickler, Kaffe Matthews, Phil Durrant, Thomas Lehn, Jerôme Noetinger.

'borderless' is an interactive hand drawn audio-visual performance made by the Lappetites that originates from collective experiments imagining a world where there are no borders, no countries and humans can live and move where they like.

Working within abstract sonic territories, their approach pulls on the diverse skills of the respective musicians.  Ryoko Akama with VCS3, AGF with melodic fragments, processings, beats and her voice and Matthews pulling patterns and noise from field recordings and internet trawled data, whilst diffusing the group within the performance space. 

The trio have collaborated with each other for 14 years and realised major projects together such as the cd 'Before the Libretto';  Fathers – the opera, HKW, Berlin 2009;  'Elemental II' with Eliane Radigue. They have performed in Toronto, Paris, Krems, Berlin, London, Stockhom, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

Kaffe Matthews is a pioneering composer and sound artist who works live with data, things and places worldwide to make new electroacoustic music for wide ranging audiences. Violin, theremin, star maps, NASA scientists, sharks, children and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra have all contributed to a growing body of work for sites such as concert halls, sonic bikes, public spaces and the human body. She received a BAFTA in 2004 for Weightless Animals, in 2006 a Distinction, Prix Ars Electronica for Sonic Bed_London  and a NESTA Dreamtime Fellowship.  She is an Honorary Professor of Music at the Shanghai Music Conservatory, and was the first Edgar Varèse Guest Professor, DAAD, at TU Audio Communications, Berlin. 

She has been releasing solo works on Annette Works since 1996. In 2014 she established The Bicrophonic Research Institute(BRI) and is currently developing interactive Sensory Bikes and compositions for them, having made 10 international bike operas to date.
