Influences: my wider influences are quite varied; they can be as obvious as sport/athletic performance, late 90s new york fashion/street style, to more subtle things like the textures of plants, or a good conversation for example. Musically, I often gravitate towards euphoric, romantic, groovy styles. They need not be genre specific. Musical influences include E.B.E., Vince Watson, K-Hand to name a few but there are so many !!

Advice for the DJs, producers and artists of our community: I recently spoke at a panel hosted at Abbey Road Studios and someone asked a question regarding building an audience/exposure as an artist. I truly believe surrounding yourself with like-minded people and/or creating in alignment with your values goes a long way. Giving value and purpose that is meaningful to you and your immediate audience will always go the distance.

Blazing into the booth this week is Trax Unit, the relentlessly fun duo of DJ KMS and DJ Mahroo. The Los Angeles-based pair established their Gyration Station label in 2020 and in the five years since have pumped out one slamming release after another, kicking off with the classic Trax Unit Vol. 1 EP which immediately grabbed the attention of Cromby, Sally C and Lauren Flax. Jacking house is their specialty — bumping, festive tracks intended to spread smiles and shake asses, and the boys whip crowds into a frenzy wherever they go, from their Homage Brewing home base in LA to Signal, Nowadays and H0L0 in NYC and their recent European debut at Berlin’s OXI and Paris’ Le Gare/Le Gore.

There’s a joy and bounce to Trax Unit’s DJing and productions that feels indebted to their city, and their Center Booth set is no different — a sunny blast of energy that tore through our black-and-blue Brooklyn studio.

The duo went B2B for sixty minutes of pure heat: all swinging drums, Latin-tinged rhythms, and grinding Chicago-style grooves. Mid ‘00s French broken beats mingle with David Morales, millennium-era DJ Petzi, Pacha-ready Brazilian techno, new Skudge, and soulful German deep house. Mixing is loose and free, the vibe is nonstop party, and the compulsion is to head outside, grab a margarita and dance as we soak up the last days of t-shirt weather (those of us on the East Coast, anyway). Settle in for what might be the most refreshing Center Booth yet.
