This is Part 2 of my Mystery of the Motherbeat series of DJ mixes. I’ve wanted to record this mix for a long time as a follow-up to my 2018 mix by the same name. Luis Manuel Garcia–Mispireta joined Gravity's event in Prague in January 2024 to talk about his research and read excerpts from his latest book – Together, Somehow: Music, Affect, and Intimacy on the Dancefloor.

The book examines how people find ways to get along and share a dancefloor. Drawing on years of field research the author explains this bonding in terms of what he calls stranger-intimacy: the kind of warmth, sharing, and vulnerability between people on the dancefloor most of us experienced.

Luis Manuel Garcia-Mispireta is a scholar, curator, and practitioner of popular electronic music, using practice-led ethnographic methods. Luis is also a DJ and member of Berlin’s Room 4 Resistance collective.
