Every night I found her at the edge of the lake in the dream that wasn’t a dream. The moon, pale and strange, always hanging in the sky, casting its unnatural glow over everything. It lingered in the quiet like a distant god, observing everything. I couldn’t remember when I realized it, but I knew. It was there for me.

She stood by the water, an apparition, her figure blurred. I should have known her. There was something in the way she moved, something that whispered to me that I had met her before. But I didn’t remember.
The lake’s surface was unnaturally still, rippling only where the light of the moon touched.

“You’re here,” she said, "don't you remember the dream?" The moon seemed to hum in response.

I stared at her, trying to place her, trying to pull her into something familiar. But the harder I tried, the further away she seemed. There was something in her eyes, something that tugged at me, like a song I used to know but couldn’t remember the lyrics to.

“Do I know you?” I asked.

She tilted her head, her eyes soft with something like sadness. "You’ve always known me," she said. But how? Where? The words danced around me like mist.

"How do I leave this place?" I pleaded.

"Leave? You can't leave, you know that already, maybe you've forgotten that too."

The moon pulsed, as if it had taken notice.

"You’re not real," I whispered to myself, but the words felt wrong. The moon shone brighter for a moment, a pulse of light, like it was correcting me.
She turned toward the lake, her silhouette stretching, merging with the water. And that’s when I saw it.

"Look," she said. "The truth is beneath."

I felt the pull of the lake.

I stepped forward, closer to the lake, closer to the rippling reflection. The water was calm, but beneath the surface, I could see it. A place where the truth waited. I didn’t understand how, but I knew it was a place I had been before. A place the moon had been before, too.

"You’ve forgotten," she whispered. Her voice faded as if she was being pulled away. "But the moon remembers."

The cold water enveloped me, the world around me becoming dark and muffled. I sank, deeper and deeper, but the moon’s light followed me, clinging to me like a second skin.

I opened my eyes beneath the water, and the memories came rushing back in fragments. Faces blurred, names lost, a life I couldn’t place, all tangled together in the silence of the lake.

And then, through the murk, I saw her again, for the first time. No longer an apparition. She was standing in the water, but she wasn’t just part of the reflection anymore. She was real. Her face was clearer now, her smile familiar. And in that moment, I remembered.

She was someone I had once known. Someone I had abandoned or forgotten. A part of me that had slipped away long ago, but the moon had kept it alive, in the dark waters, waiting for me to find it again. And when I reached out to touch her, the water enveloped me completely, as though it were no longer water, but memory itself.

And then she was gone, just another ripple in the water, but the moon still watched. It would never stop watching and the lake would never stop holding me. Then I woke up and dreamed the dream that wasn’t a dream again.

Beneath the silvered skies I swim,
I sink where silent waters glow,
A lake of glass that’s not quite there,
A frozen breath, a secret air.

The waves, they speak in fractured song,
Of echoes that have lived too long,
Where shadows crawl beneath the skin,
And none can tell where time begins.

The lake's dark heart beats slow,
As memories twist, then fade, then flow,
In moonlit lies, I drown, I sleep - 
Trapped in depths I cannot keep.

A boat, a ghost, a flickered face,
All lost within this hollow space,
The water mocks, the stars deny,
As I sink further, yet still I fly.

The lake, it sings with silence clear,
A song that only I can hear,
Caught between the tide and sky,
Trapped beneath the moon's sharp eye.

You think I’m just doing nothing, thinking about nothing, cutting myself off from everything, throwing my entire life away, leaving every last thing I know and care about behind, and that’s all it took for me to call it quits? That’s a lie, it was never that easy for me. It was so much easier for me to go on thinking there was something I could do to make a real difference, but I know now there’s nothing I can do. There’s no way out. Understand? The only path everything leads to is giving up. If I could do something, then I’d do it. I swear that I would.
