Under the spell of one of the most empowering evenings of exchange of music and habibtiness, I recorded this mix out of a melancholic mood that took me back to songs that used to occupy the lebanese TV and radio rotation for months. After an overwhelming start with the illustrious artist Cuttlefish & Asparagus, who did an immense job both on Black Sun’s homonym and Ish’s “Don’t Stop", KALAKUTA SOUL Records come back with another deep set of disco gems, touched by the hand of one of the most respected heads of the genre. Glasgow’s disco godfather, the almighty Al Kent, has delivered three eclectic masterpieces, due to take the international dancefloors to a further level of musical consciousness. A further pack of deep dug bombs that confront the functionality in music many labels have always strived for. The A Side keeps every imaginable sound system busy with a drifty percussive harvester adorned with an eclectic instrumentation that splits flesh from bones and mind from soul. “Colder Than Cold” on the B Side is a perfect example of how a dancefloor should sound like. A thick bassdrum, a bass slapped by the fingers of a giant, keys and chords from heaven and horns hailing from the utmost depth of Kalakuta’s soul. Bringing you back to where it all started, the almighty Al Kent does an immense work on an evergreen, you might have bumped into as a munchkin. “Gee Wiz” closes this opus with a orchestral beauty that once gathered all the souls behind what we call music today. It took a long time to get this one done and we really had to wait a while for this drop. But it’s finally here and it blows our minds and souls.

With a sound spectrum wider than the panama canal Hang On In There is guaranteed to turn any straight cut jeans into glossy orange bell bottoms and any mirror into a disco ball. 

On the B side Cuttlefish & Asparagus work out one of the most essential soul joints that always made you wonder why songs couldn’t play forever. Meticulously edited without changing the filth of the unique bassline, Loving You is a wild stomper made to immediately fill or blast any imaginable dance floor.

We start the year with a new collaboration with one of the most inspiring record stores and well of fountain of fortune for all music lovers, especially for those who enjoy carribean music and the profound musical heritage of Jamaica. 

For this first release, we've created a new imprint that brings both our labels together and ended calling KABA that stands for Kalakuta Soul Bahlo Records. Ok, we admit, it isn't based on a high level of creativity, but it says what it has to tell.

For our first collaborative release, we were able to license two songs originally released on a private pressed LP by the mighty "Golden Sunshine Steel Band" in 1980 that will definitely wave you through day and night, whether you're listening to it at home, on the road or in a furious set on a mind-blowing sound system.

Der in Kapstadt geborene, charismatische und energiegeladene DJ, begabte Produzent und hoch motivierte Pädagoge Esa Williams hat eine eigene, einzigartige und expansive musikalische Identität geformt. Als Botschafter der südafrikanischen Musikszene in der überfüllten Landschaft des europäischen Nachtlebens schöpft er Inspiration aus seinen kulturellen Wurzeln, seinen weltweiten Reisen und den Leuten, die er kennenlernt, um einen Sound zu verkörpern, der keine Grenzen kennt.

Esas Umzug nach Großbritannien war ein Auslöser für seinen beeindruckenden Musik-Output, der sich stets weiterentwickelt. Nachdem er sein Naturtalent im Auflegen unter Beweis gestellt hatte, schloss er sich den legendären schottischen DJs Harri & Domenic im Sub-Club an und produzierte danach sein Rememory Music Label. Esas globale Perspektive erweitert sich ständig. In Europa hat er viele Fans und dank seiner kreativen musikalischen Produktion und seiner Veröffentlichungen werden es immer mehr. Mit der Kuration von Bildungsprogrammen mit Fokus auf elektronische Musik in Kuba, Brasilien, Ost- und Südafrika hat er sich eine eigene Nische geschaffen. Dadurch, dass er seine Fähigkeiten teilt und andere DJs und Produzent*innen inspiriert, erweitert er auch sein eigenes Wissen.

Auf seinem monatlichen Sendeplatz bei Gilles Petersons Worldwide FM kann man hören, wie Esa die Geschichten solcher Begegnungen und die daraus resultierenden musikalischen Ergebnisse miteinander verwebt. Dem Konzept einer musikalischen Reise folgend fasziniert Esa seine Zuhörer und lädt sie ein, ihn zu begleiten, wenn er im Studio oder auf der Tanzfläche Außergewöhnliches kreiert.

Kornelia Binicewicz (Ladies On Records)

ist eine polnische Kultur-Anthropologin, die aktuell in Istanbul in der Türkei lebt.  Sie war über die Jahre Kuratorin von Musik- und Kulturfestivals in Polen. 2015 ist sie nach Istanbul gezogen, um Musik von Frauen aus der Türkei und dem Mittleren Osten zu erforschen. Sie hat Ladies on Records gegründet, ein kuratiertes, facettenreiches Projekt; die Marke wurde geschaffen, um zu repräsentieren, was Frauen in den letzten Jahrzehnten zur globalen und lokalen Musik beigetragen haben. Kornelia hat „Turkish Ladies. Female Singers from Turkey 1974 – 1988“ und „Uzelli Psychedelic Anadolu“ kuratiert. 

Jeden Tag reist sie auf ihrer Insel in Istanbul durch die ganze Welt und sucht nach faszinierender Musik und bedeutsamen Geschichten zum Erzählen.
