Akimbo, founder of Seoul-based label Tonal Unity, lives by Multi Culti ideals, a man brave enough to seek adventure, understanding and love outside his native land. This mix takes us on a journey to his adopted home. Let his description and the sounds take you away:

"Spirits of the Korean Han (恨)"

The character at the end is hanja for the term "Han", here inserted for clarity, as the Korean character referring to the same concept (한) has multiple meanings. 

Han is a concept that has no English equivalent. It runs through the Korean traditional arts, and the soul of the Korean nation as a whole. An oversimplification of this concept would be "the blues", but as it is quite complex, I won't attempt to fully explain it here. Han connects deeply with Korean character, which is one of resilience and intensity. Their traditional music reaches heights of beauty, sorrow, and fury. It is defiant, spiritual, spine-tingling, and trance-inducing stuff. 

Modern Korea is a place of juxtaposition. Ancient temples are tucked in between skyscrapers. Teens and tourists ride the waves of Hallyu trends while shamans lead extreme weeklong rituals in the mountains. Club kids in Seoul dance all night to banging techno (no drugs btw), while groups of itinerant performers travel the countryside in the spirit of the namsadang, much unchanged for hundreds of years. 

This mix is meant to be an introduction to Korean sounds, while also attempting to connect them in context with other East Asian tribal traditions and ritualistic electronics.

The Korean names have been romanized for this tracklist, but it can often be difficult to find the music by searching in English. For the original Korean text, let me know in the comments.

Among cumulus clouds is flourishing the kingdom of heavens...Whose inhabitants carefully hide in other vibrating sections of reality, impossible to see them from the ground, but they can choose when to show themselves... 

We meet with little Haneul-Ai, who always loved to watch to the earthly world, cause its rhythm and manners are so so strikingly different from what was happening surround her...Once, curiosity prevailed and with the support of the wind, on her viman she landed at the Yellow sea beach, in Korea...At the same moment, a couple passed by and when they saw the shining orb, they hastened to see what the heavens had sent them...This couple couldn’t have children, therefore, this evening they were on the beach, sending their prayers to the god of the sea and when they found the girl, they considered this their answer! 

Years flew like an arrow shot from a bow...Haneul-Ai grow very fast and successfully mastered her new world, and celestial life gradually disappeared into the halls of memory...One day, the waves told the Sea Lord about a girl of extraordinary beauty, living in a village by the shore...He decided to have a look, and as a result, spellbounded, he steals this treasure and drags her into his underwater kingdom... 

For several years she lived under the blanket of the sea...Meanwhile, grief came to the village - unable to withstand her absence and mother dies, and her father loses his sight...Oh and ah...In the underwater world, everything did not go according to the plan of the God of the sea, as her beauty was always overshadowed by sadness...Realizing the failure of his actions, he gives a choice, and Haneul-Ai returns to the village where finds her father in poor condition...Seeing everything that happened during this period, tears rolled from her eyes, and nothing could comfort her... With the wind circling, she grabbed one of the crystals of her tears, falling down on her cheeks like a waterfall, and delivered it to the sea god... With the help of his strength, her father’s vision was restored! All together they went to live in the sea world, where they live in peace and harmony until now…
The Sun will forever shine, and everything is a circulation of happiness and unhappiness, depending on how you see it... What perspective you choose... 

This is a new chapter of Amateur Exotic’s mixtales written by Seoul-based artist - Akimbo! 

PS: Its a live recording of a hybrid DJ set (CDJs, OP-1 synth, iPad synth) 
at a meditative Sunday session in the Euljiro area of Seoul... Reflection on 
Eastern sounds and the more ambient and leftfield leanings of Tonal Unity 
label curation...
